The kitchen in this lovely traditionally styled home in Scituate, MA was designed by David from our Braintree showroom. It features Showplace’s cherry cabinetry in Rockport grey wash and is well accented by the white with brushed walnut island to create an inviting space to share with company. Cambria’s quartz countertops in Berwyn finish were paired with the large white apron front sink on the island with seating for five or more. Special features include: a wine center, remote butler’s pantry with liquor storage, beautiful wolf/sub-zero appliances, and a desk area with open shelves for personalizing the space. The overall aesthetic has a sophisticated appeal, but is also very warm and inviting. This was achieved in part by the incorporation of varied colors, textures, and finishes used throughout the space. The look was further enhanced by the custom tile mosaic and with items the homeowners collected during their many travels. The project’s starting point was to understand the building’s original post and beam structure and to use that internal logic to formulate a sympathetic remodel. With an emphasis on the upper back unit, the owner’s private residence within this recently purchased Edward Killingsworth triplex, the first order of business was to strip the excess out and to return the complex to something that resembled the original. With a limited budget, the tact was to restore where possible, and to insert where needed, but always with a sympathetic eye. The kitchen quickly became the primary focus and it was soon realized that by removing the division between the existing galley and family room that the essence of the structural system could be revealed. Once opened the datum of the layered beams was adhered to with the kitchen reinforcing this overhead water line. The primary internal wall was then highlighted with a new wood veneer with the refrigerator recessed (borrowing a bit of space from the master closet) and the existing heater chromed.

Designed by architect Bing Hu, this modern open-plan home has sweeping views of Desert Mountain from every room. The high ceilings, large windows and pocketing doors create an airy feeling and the patios are an extension of the indoor spaces. The warm tones of the limestone floors and wood ceilings are enhanced by the soft colors in the Donghia furniture. The walls are hand-trowelled venetian plaster or stacked stone. The remodeling of the kitchen and bathroom forms the core of this interior renovation. The existing peninsula design and cabinetry broke up the ‘great room’ and stood the kitchen as a distinct element within the room. Our design strategy operates more on a principle of integration. As such, we created a galley condition with a spine of cabinetry and appliances that anchors to the long wall of the room. The feature design element is the solid Caesarstone backsplash which appears to be carved from the wall itself. The particular challenge in the windowless bathroom was how to create an inviting, expanded sense of depth without a resulting cave-like feel. Removal of a half wall, soffit and tub unified the space overall. We reinforced the unification with the deployment of a single large format tile spec. Smaller details such as touch latch cabinetry hardware and flush conditions between tile, wall and mirror further the principle that simpler is bigger, deeper and more inviting. We were also charged with elevating what was a pedestrian 1990’s townhouse to something more sophisticated and engaging. Our approach was to first remove builder grade detailing around windows and railings. These kitchens were designed for 1 or 2 bedroom units in the heart of Boston. We mixed the walnut grains with solid frosty whites to attract to modern and transitional style buyers.

A once closed off kitchen now opens up to the living room, converting it into one seamless space. Hickory cabinetry is finished in a warm gray stain giving it a unique medium brown glow. Light white Lagoinha quartzite graces the island and black Raven granite finishes off the perimeter. White subway tile reflects light from the surrounding windows drawing in the needed light. Seating for three accommodates the family and the connecting living room and built-in bar is perfectly suited for entertaining family and friends.
