Our client's galley kitchen lacked practical storage with an outdated layout that didn’t flow. They approached Matter to maximise the available storage with a more cohesive layout to suit their evolving needs in the years ahead. They allowed near free reign over design and materials, with one simple request that each are equally contemporary and functional. Our design solution combines hard-wearing Blackbutt plywood and grey Forescolor MDF for the door and drawer fronts with laminate-face plywood carcasses. As the MDF has a full colour core, we added a new handle design that cut into the face on a taper, enabling a larger finger-pull and play of light on the surface. Solid Blackbutt handles and vertical partitions are a contemporary take on traditional frame and panel doors. For a touch of indulgence, we added beautifully dramatic Faustina quartzite bench tops and splashbacks from Artedomus. All lower cupboards were replaced with drawers featuring adjustable partitions and a large pull-out Kesseböhmer pantry to ensure food is easily accessed. The oven and microwave were moved next to the stove area and raised for better accessibility. A bench top appliance nook hides away the kettle and toaster behind a custom-made Blackbutt tambour door. We also replaced a section of overhead cupboards with slatted shelving and a mirrored backing that reflects natural light to open up the tight space. Lastly, we added a pull-up bench at the end of the galley to allow our client all the surface area they need to continue to cook meals with complete ease.

Dozens of finished maple drawers and cabinets provide the homeowner with plenty of storage space. The cabinetry is tastefully decorated with beaded insets and neatly frames the kitchen appliances. - Allison Caves, CKD Caves Kitchens

This mountain modern kitchen contains two main materials in immense proportions: granite and wood. With complimentary stainless steel appliances, this owner created a beautiful cooking space. The cabinets are the focal point of the kitchen, the custom panel over the dishwasher allows it to blend with the kitchen cabinetry. The chosen counter-tops contain hues that compliment the cabinets. Having the same granite slab as the counter-tops on the back-splash and down along one side of the counter, without a doubt made this the single most prominent item of color being added to the room. Granite ensured they were durable and easy to clean and deciding on a slab allowed them to have minimal grout lines. Being that the wood chosen for the cabinets was simple and natural, the granite was able to be a little more colorful and textured. Sticking to this small palette of color also makes this kitchen simple and yet stunning.

The kitchen design was inspired by the Matisse painting “The Red Room”, a favorite of the homeowners, with its color palate and patterned wallpaper. The homeowners love to cook and designed the kitchen to maximize function and remain true to the period elements of the home, while taking their family’s needs into consideration. They added a command center, charging station, lots of counter/ storage space and a custom hutch with a butcher block counter to use as a baking station. The Kitchen cabinets feature Cherry, Crystal Cabinet Works, Inset, Framed Cabinetry with Breezewood Stain. The perimeter cabinets feature Green Soapstone with a full height backsplash behind the range.

This functional and open kitchen was crafted with stylish maple finished cabinets and a black glaze with oil rubbed bronze handles. The black quartz counter tops complement the dark colored cabinetry. Ample storage space was created using a variety of unique cabinet fixtures, such as a spice pullout, a fancy corner turnout, and roll out shelves.
