Designer Sarah Robertson of Studio Dearborn helped a neighbor and friend to update a “builder grade” kitchen into a personal, family space that feels luxurious and inviting. The homeowner wanted to solve a number of storage and flow problems in the kitchen, including a wasted area dedicated to a desk, too-little pantry storage, and her wish for a kitchen bar. The all white builder kitchen lacked character, and the client wanted to inject color, texture and personality into the kitchen while keeping it classic.

Camlin Custom Homes Courageous Model Home. Expansive kitchen features Natural stones countertops, classic coastal style cabinetry and white and gray finishes. High ceilings and large windows fill the kitchen with lots of natural light.

Plenty of counters in this modern coastal kitchen where homeowner wanted striking dark countertops. The adjoining dining room features a builtin bar area with wavy glass in upper cabinets and zinc countertops.

SCOPE: Within existing kitchen footprint alone, design for better kitchen floorplan + add half bath. CHALLENGE: - Kitchen: Cramped storage, counter and body space for 2 cooks. - Bathroom: There was none on the main floor (not uncommon for a 1911 house). SOLUTION: - Kitchen: The dated garden window and small corner window with no views were eliminated creating additional wall cabinet storage. The range and sink on the ends of the “U-shape” created 13’ of uninterrupted storage and counter. The window facing the backyard was replaced, height raised, allowing for new sink location. - Bathroom: A Euro-sized half bath was squeezed out of existing kitchen space and yet, the kitchen storage and counter were almost doubled (yes, it’s magic). These delightful homeowners came to us desirous of a kitchen with improved function, an open floor-plan and modernized look. Their dated kitchen was galley-style with a peninsula and was not conducive to cooking or entertaining. We began by removing a load bearing wall from the galley-style kitchen to create an open-concept kitchen that seamlessly connected the dining room, allowing for the use of an island providing more functional space. We relocated a window permitting the addition of more cabinets for storage and improved function. The custom white painted perimeter cabinets and stained maple island makes this kitchen classy and timeless. In addition to the kitchen transformation, we also refreshed their powder bath creating more space with a smaller wall-mount sink and toilet. We finished the update with new wallpaper and a light fixture. The result is a stunning kitchen, dining room and powder bath our homeowners can entertain and enjoy for years to come.

Five residential-style, three-level cottages are located behind the hotel facing 32nd Street. Spanning 1,500 square feet with a kitchen, rooftop deck featuring a fire place + barbeque, two bedrooms and a living room, showcasing masterfully designed interiors. Each cottage is named after the islands in Newport Beach and features a distinctive motif, tapping five elite Newport Beach-based firms: Grace Blu Interior Design, Jennifer Mehditash Design, Brooke Wagner Design, Erica Bryen Design and Blackband Design.

A dated kitchen transformed into a stunning modern farmhouse style kitchen using custom cabinet refacing in a care-free, easy to clean white thermofoil and a unique "stepped" shaker style door. The countertops are SileStone Charcoal Soapstone Quartz in their Suede finish...the look and beauty of real soapstone without the worry of stains and discoloration. The homeowner chose oil rubbed bronze cabinet hardware and faucet. They completed this modern look with a copper farmhouse sink. The unique ceiling brings beautiful lighting to the space no matter what time of day. A touch of shiplap paneling on the back of the peninsula ties the rooms together. Up to date stainless steel appliances make this a kitchen for friends and family to gather together.

This delightful family lived with their traditional kitchen for several years before bringing me in to expand and modernize. The 1920’s Tudor had the typical compartmentalized rooms surrounding the kitchen. A previous owner had expanded it into the breakfast room, but hadn’t removed any walls. However, they placed a large addition in the rear which enabled us to remove the cramped ½ bath and practically inaccessible pantry for relocation. By removing those walls, we were able to expand into a naturally-flowing U-shaped kitchen with a seating peninsula, adding a second prep sink for another cook. Removing the gas range, we added double ovens, an induction cooktop, and 30-inch-deep pantry cabinets, thus giving the full-depth refrigerator the appearance of a built-in. L-shaped, floating corner shelves with incorporated LED lights contribute to the openness. While we liked the idea of removing the wall to the existing dining room, the need to keep the family cat out of certain areas led us to remove only half, and installing a gorgeous barn door. What would normally be considered an appliance garage is actually a recessed space into where we eventually put a new ½ bath, which provides an interesting defined shelf space within the bath.
