Virginia AIA Merit Award for Excellence in Residential Design | What appeared to be a simple, worn-out, early 20th century stucco cottage was to be modestly renovated as a weekend retreat. But when the contractor and architects began pulling away the interior wall finishes, they discovered a log cabin at its core (believed to date as far back as the 1780’s) and a newer addition (circa 1920’s) at the rear where the site slopes down. Initial plans were scrapped, and a new project was born that honors the original construction while accommodating new infrastructure and the clients’ modern tastes. A galley kitchen of concrete and reclaimed wood lines one wall of the walkout basement. The existing concrete slab was acid washed, a window seat added to look out on the lower terrace, the stair stripped of paint, and the minimalist line of the new stair rail extended to connect the basement to the two floors above.

This split-level home in the Castro Valley Hills contained multiple different floor levels and was segmented by walls, creating a kitchen with wasted space and a tiny dining room that could hardly fit a table for four. Ridgecrest took down the walls in the main living space to create a great room that is perfect for family time and entertaining. This completely custom kitchen features customized inset cabinetry, a matte black steel range hood, white oak floating shelves, a one-of-a-kind white oak pantry door with a steel mesh panel, steel mesh panels on the wall cabinetry, and beautiful black marbled quartz countertops. The satin brass hardware and fixtures pop against the white and black surfaces. The kitchen window opens across a passthrough countertop for outdoor entertaining. In the living room, a floor-to-ceiling concrete colored quartz fireplace is surrounded by a custom white oak entertainment center.

This family fell in love with a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home that needed a few updates to fit their lifestyle. They needed more functional kitchen space for caterers and also for their own love of cooking. The kitchen island was redesigned to improve function and add extra oven space, a wine fridge and a prep sink. Block Builders replicated the original cabinetry style for the island and added Frank Lloyd Wright design elements to all of the cabinets. Custom Motawi tile and a stainless exhaust hood are featured above the Wolf range. Window banquette seating designed for the dinette makes the space more welcoming and comfortable. The dishwasher fits under the sink's drainboard The goal of the project was to create a more functional kitchen, but to remodel with an eco-friendly approach. To minimize the waste going into the landfill, all the old cabinetry and appliances were donated, and the kitchen floor was kept intact because it was in great condition. The challenge was to design the kitchen around the existing floor and the natural soapstone the client fell in love with. The clients continued with the sustainable theme throughout the room with the new materials chosen: The back splash tiles are eco-friendly and hand-made in the USA.. The custom range hood was a beautiful addition to the kitchen. We maximized the counter space around the custom sink by extending the integral drain board above the dishwasher to create more prep space. In the adjacent laundry room, we continued the same color scheme to create a custom wall of cabinets to incorporate a hidden laundry shoot, and dog area. We also added storage around the washer and dryer including two different types of hanging for drying purposes.
