The original 1982 kitchen in this Aspen Golf Course home featured a dropped ceiling, laminate counters of different heights, and outdated finishes and appliances. The new design raised the ceiling and revealed structural beams for a rustic feeling while bigger windows were installed to take advantage of the fairway views. Custom, hand-made cabinetry was built and topped with a beautiful tortoise granite slab for a clean, traditional look. The craftsman wood details in the cabinetry, island, and shelves provide a bespoke mountain aesthetic unique to this project. Upgrade appliances complete the kitchen with modern technology for improved functionality.

Three level island... The homeowner’s wanted a large galley style kitchen with island. It was important to the wife the island be unique and serve many purposes. Our team used Google Sketchup to produce and present concept after concept. Each revision brought us closer to what you see. The final design boasted a two sided island (yes, there is storage under the bar) 6” thick cantilevered bar ledge over a steel armature, and waterfall counter tops on both ends. On one end we had a slit fabricated to receive one side of a tempered glass counter top. The other side is supported by a stainless steel inverted U. There’s nothing as wonderful as walking into a mid-century gem with clients who love the character of their new home. Our goal for this project was to incorporate the mid-century bones of this home into a new design that would better meet the contemporary needs of our clients. We started by taking down the walls that had separated this kitchen from the rest of the home and creating a welcoming space that blended seamlessly with the new open concept. The new kitchen design was a win for our clients with increased storage, more work surfaces, and a peninsula with plenty of seating. We utilized wood finishes through out this space with light wood flooring, medium-tones on the cabinetry, and darker wood accents throughout giving us a beautiful balance and a calm backdrop. This home had beautiful horizontal lines that we wanted to accentuate, so we selected a dark wood finish for the central beam and tied it in with the dark finish on the wood fireplace mantel and the stair handrail to emphasize the horizontal features. But we never miss an opportunity for a fun mid-century pop, and this home provided plenty of inspiration! The boomerang hardware on the cabinets and escher backsplash tiles give us great geometric elements to break up the clean lines of the rest of the space. One of our favorite features of this home was the original plaster ceilings with the custom hand troweled texture. We knew from the beginning that this was an element we wanted to maintain and accentuate, so when we opened up the kitchen and added recessed lighting we reached out to a local plaster artisan to carry the texture throughout the space, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. This design brings together the mid-century aesthetics of clean lines and fun patterns with the modern-day functionality our clients were looking for in their new kitchen.

Modern Kitchen with wood stained cabinets, dark quartz stone countertop, moody bronze tile backsplash. This Kitchen has custom patterned drapery with large windows and views to the canyon view. The counter stools are covered with an indoor/outdoor modern fabric from Kelly Wearstler.

The open concept Great Room includes the Kitchen, Breakfast, Dining, and Living spaces. The dining room is visually and physically separated by built-in shelves and a coffered ceiling. Windows and french doors open from this space into the adjacent Sunroom. The wood cabinets and trim detail present throughout the rest of the home are highlighted here, brightened by the many windows, with views to the lush back yard. The large island features a pull-out marble prep table for baking, and the counter is home to the grocery pass-through to the Mudroom / Butler's Pantry.

Designed and constructed by Woodways, this Funky Contemporary kitchen adds warmth to this retro styled home. Frameless cabinets with flat panel slab doors create a sleek and crisp look within the space. The accent island adds contrast to the natural colors within the cabinets and backsplash and becomes a focal point for the space. An added sink in the island allows for easy preparation and cleaning of food in this work area.
