In the early 50s, Herbert and Ruth Weiss attended a lecture by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius hosted by MIT. They were fascinated by Gropius’ description of the ‘Five Fields’ community of 60 houses he and his firm, The Architect’s Collaborative (TAC), were designing in Lexington, MA. The Weiss’ fell in love with Gropius’ vision for a grouping of 60 modern houses to be arrayed around eight acres of common land that would include a community pool and playground. They soon had one of their own.The original, TAC-designed house was a single-slope design with a modest footprint of 800 square feet. Several years later, the Weiss’ commissioned modernist architect Henry Hoover to add a living room wing and new entry to the house. Hoover’s design included a wall of glass which opens to a charming pond carved into the outcropping of granite ledge. After living in the house for 65 years, the Weiss’ sold the house to our client, who asked us to design a renovation that would respect the integrity of the vintage modern architecture. Our design focused on reorienting the kitchen, opening it up to the family room. The bedroom wing was redesigned to create a principal bedroom with en-suite bathroom. Interior finishes were edited to create a more fluid relationship between the original TAC home and Hoover’s addition. We worked closely with the builder, Patriot Custom Homes, to install Solar electric panels married to an efficient heat pump heating and cooling system. These updates integrate modern touches and high efficiency into a striking piece of architectural history.

We took their small tight cluttered space and gave them a chefs kitchen with open walls and cleared counter top space. Smart and thoughtful storage was key in designing this kitchen for the needs of our client. The Fieldstone Cabinetry in a slab Tempe Simply White Cabinet includes pantry storage, corner solutions, pull out storage and thoughtful organization. The beautiful Cambria Quartz Brittanica Gold counter tops flow up the back range wall, making a stunning statement in the kitchen. Floating corner shelves give a decorative accent as well as easy access storage for everyday used items. This modern kitchen is loved by our clients and hopefully loved by you and sparks some inspiration for your kitchen remodel.

A modern curved kitchen installed in Northampton. The design concept was to create a unique open plan living space for a young family which could also function as a casual dining and relaxing area. Gloss white handle-less units have been softened with matt anthracite feature panels and an oak breakfast bar area. This kitchen features Neff appliances, Quooker flex boiling tap, Blanco sink, high performance Air Uno chimney-less hood and LED lighting.

This kitchen is a wheelchair accessible kitchen designed by Adam Thomas of Design Matters. With acrylic doors and brushed steel handles for comfortable use. The worktops are height adjustable and have raised edges on all four sides to contain hot spills and reduce the risk of injury. The kitchen is packed with accessible storage such as wall cupboards that descend to worktop height, and this substantial pull-down basket which brings the contents of the cupboard within reach. Sato Architects was hired to update the kitchen, utility room, and existing bathrooms in this 1930s Spanish bungalow. The existing spaces were closed in, and the finishes felt dark and bulky. We reconfigured the spaces to maximize efficiency and feel bigger without actually adding any square footage. Aesthetically, we focused on clean lines and finishes, with just the right details to accent the charm of the existing 1930s style of the home. This project was a second phase to the Modern Charm Spanish Primary Suite Addition.
