Midcentury modern home on Lake Sammamish. We used mixed materials and styles to add interest to this bright space. The built-in kitchen nook with custom tables is a regular meeting place for dinners and games for this family of five.

Photography by Manolo Langis Located steps away from the beach, the client engaged us to transform a blank industrial loft space to a warm inviting space that pays respect to its industrial heritage. We use anchored large open space with a sixteen foot conversation island that was constructed out of reclaimed logs and plumbing pipes. The island itself is divided up into areas for eating, drinking, and reading. Bringing this theme into the bedroom, the bed was constructed out of 12x12 reclaimed logs anchored by two bent steel plates for side tables.

The brick found in the backsplash and island was chosen for its sympathetic materiality that is forceful enough to blend in with the native steel, while the bold, fine grain Zebra wood cabinetry coincides nicely with the concrete floors without being too ostentatious. Photo Credit: Mark Woods

Reclaimed wood lines the walls and counters of the kitchen and dark tones accent the different spaces of the apartment. Brick walls were exposed and the stair was stripped to its raw steel finish. The guest bath shower is lined with textured slate while the floor is clad in striped Moroccan tile.

Crafted with precision, this kitchen island boasts a sleek waterfalling concrete countertop, seamlessly integrated butcher block, and edgy raw sheet metal beneath the overhang. The term “industrial” evokes images of large factories with lots of machinery and moving parts. These cavernous, old brick buildings, built with steel and concrete are being rehabilitated into very desirable living spaces all over the country. Old manufacturing spaces have unique architectural elements that are often reclaimed and repurposed into what is now open residential living space. Exposed ductwork, concrete beams and columns, even the metal frame windows are considered desirable design elements that give a nod to the past. This unique loft space is a perfect example of the rustic industrial style. The exposed beams, brick walls, and visible ductwork speak to the building’s past. Add a modern kitchen in complementing materials and you have created casual sophistication in a grand space.
