Despite the grand size of the 300-square-foot den and its cathedral ceiling, the room remains cozy and welcoming. The casual living space is a respite from the white walls and trim that illuminate most of the main level. Instead, natural cherry built-in shelving and paneling span the fireplace wall and fill the room with a warm masculine sensibility. The hearth surround of the gas fireplace exhibits prosperity for detail. The herringbone pattern is constructed of small, tumbled-slate tiles and topped with a simple natural cherry mantel. There are integrated windows into the design of the fireplace wall. The small, high sidelights are joined by three grand windows that fill most of the room's back wall and offer an inviting view of the backyard. Comfortable twin chairs and a classic-style sofa provide ideal spots to relax, read or enjoy a show on the TV, which is hidden in the corner behind vintage shutters.

Formal living created shiplap wall run into the ceiling. The new build space had this drop down beam in-between both formal and family living. We created a glass vestibule to separate the areas but still have them feel open and give purpose to that drop down beam.

The room is divided into two functional spaces. The largest portion contains seating for seven people defined by a large area rug. This area is perfect for watching a game, movie or enjoying company. A high-top table an chairs sit behind the seating area for easy television viewing or to play a game.

Homeowners’ request: To convert the existing wood burning fire place into a gas insert and installed a tv recessed into the wall. To be able to fit the oversized antique leather couch, to fit a massive library collection. I want my space to be functional, warm and cozy. I want to be able to sit by my fireplace, read my beloved books, gaze through the large bay window and admire the view. This space should feel like my sanctuary but I want some whimsy and lots of color like an old English den but it must be organized and cohesive. Designer secret: Building the fireplace and making sure to be able to fit non custom bookcases on either side, adding painted black beams to the ceiling giving the space the English cozy den feeling, utilizing the opposite wall to fit tall standard bookcases, minimizing the furniture so that the clients' over sized couch fits, adding a whimsical desk and wall paper to tie all the elements together.
