The low wall was set 3 ft back from the sidewalk with plants placed in front. The stairs create a niche for the front gate where we placed urns with dwarf Kumquat trees planted in them. An electric gate for their cars creates some security.

APLD 2022 Award Winning Landscape Design. We designed and installed this dramatic living wall / vertical garden to add a welcoming focal point, and a great way to add living beauty to the large front house wall. The wall includes a variety of succulents, grass-like and cascading plants some with flowers, (some with flowers, Oxalis, Heuchera designed to provide long cascading "waves" with appealing textures and colors. The dated walkway was updated with large geometric concrete pavers with polished black pebbles in between, and a new concrete driveway. Water-wise grasses flowering plants and succulents replace the lawn. This updated modern renovation for this mid-century modern home includes a new garage and front entrance door and modern garden light fixtures. Simple stone and blue stone walkway lead to the front door from the street side parking. Plantings were selected to emphasize the structure and sense of entry. Located on the shores of Puget Sound in Washington State. Photos by Ian Gleadle

A river of no mow grass gives movement around boulders. Various leaf shaped ground covers spread across front landscape and around the two featured Japanese Maples.

This is a very modern unique style by the owners. They wanted clean lines, minimal plants and core ten steel. Note the "edgy & angled" core ten edging...sets this design apart! Also the unique, colorful, water wise perennials and ornamental grass. Note also the two entrances to the front door...very unique!!! And the large concrete pavers with the sizable island bed. A short 42“ high pony wall was erected in the front yard with a gate for visitors and an electric gate for their cars. The front gate was inset into a niche which allowed for some stylish urns planted with dwarf Kumquat trees.

Formed pavers moved in a sweeping motion away from the original linear install. Large boulders as contrasting feature to the gentle grass movement.

Aeonium and other succulents and grasses line the new concrete pathway complimented by Mexican pebbles. To gain more usable space in this narrow landscape and update the hardscaping and overgrown garden, my design reconfigured the pathway with poured-in-place concrete pavers accented by Mexican pebbles and a stunning variety of succulents and other site-appropriate plantings that thrive in shade and part sun. We removed the tree to create a patio area large enough to fit a table and chairs for a small group. Non-invasive/clumping Bamboo was added to help screen the patio and provide privacy. Other shade to part-shade plants were included that provide a variety of textures and colors throughout the seasons. Low-voltage lighting was installed for safety and ambiance. The Client wanted a hardscape and plant material design to match the steel and masonry vernacular of the home. This was a DIY project for the Client who was adept at welding and general hardscape construction.

This back yard garden is in its early stages but already offering a multitude of colors and textures. The purple flowering Agastache in the foreground is a favorite native plant for butterfiles
