This replacement dwelling at Tregoose, Polzeath is a two-storey, detached, four bedroom house with open plan reception space on the ground floor and bedrooms on the lower level. Sympathetic to its context and neighbouring buildings, the split-level accommodation has been designed to maximise stunning coastal and ocean views from the property. The living and dining areas on the ground floor benefit from a large, full-height gable window and a glazed balcony oriented to take advantage of the views whilst still maintaining privacy for neighbouring properties. The house features engineered oak flooring and a bespoke oak staircase with glazed balustrades. Skylights ensure the house is extremely well lit and roof-mounted solar panels produce hot water, with an airsource heat pump connected to underfloor heating. Close proximity to the popular surfing beach at Polzeath is reflected in the outdoor shower and large, copper-tiled wet room with giant walk-in shower and bespoke wetsuit drying rack. My clients Living Room in East Portlemouth. The sofa and love seat were made in Exeter, to my design by one of my bespoke upholstery manufacturers. The chairs are reupholstered B&B Italia chairs, reupholstered in a Colefax and Fowler Linen mix fabric. The coffee table was sourced from Conran and the rug was a bespoke design. The leather chair is the clients own. The aim was to create a relaxed socialising space. all the chairs face each other but the swivel chairs can also face the beautiful estuary view, overlooking Salcombe. This is stage one of a two phase project, Items like the radiators and carpets may be changed in phase two.

Located in the small, unspoilt cove at Crackington Haven, Grey Roofs replaced a structurally unsound 1920s bungalow which was visually detrimental to the village and surrounding AONB. Set on the side of a steep valley, the new five bedroom dwelling fits discreetly into its coastal context and provides a modern home with high levels of energy efficiency. The design concept is of a simple, heavy stone plinth built into the hillside for the partially underground lower storey, with the upper storey comprising of a lightweight timber frame. Large areas of floor to ceiling glazing give dramatic views westwards along the valley to the cove and the sea beyond. The basic form is traditional, with a pitched roof and natural materials such as slate, timber, render and stone, but interpreted and detailed in a contemporary manner. Solar thermal panels and air source heat pumps optimise sustainable energy solutions for the property. Removal of ad hoc ancillary sheds and the construction of a replacement garage completed the project. Grey Roofs was a Regional Finalist in the LABC South West Building Excellence Awards for ‘Best Individual dwelling’. Photograph: Alison White
