This award-winning whole house renovation of a circa 1875 single family home in the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington DC provides the client with an open and more functional layout without requiring an addition. After major structural repairs and creating one uniform floor level and ceiling height, we were able to make a truly open concept main living level, achieving the main goal of the client. The large kitchen was designed for two busy home cooks who like to entertain, complete with a built-in mud bench. The water heater and air handler are hidden inside full height cabinetry. A new gas fireplace clad with reclaimed vintage bricks graces the dining room. A new hand-built staircase harkens to the home's historic past. The laundry was relocated to the second floor vestibule. The three upstairs bathrooms were fully updated as well. Final touches include new hardwood floor and color scheme throughout the home.

Ceramic tiled splash paired with black honed granite. Pendant lights in matte black to bring interest and functionality. Bedrosian Cloe white tiles in six inch splash to add a bit of texture without being too visually heavy. Hexagon terracotta-tone tiles bring warm to the room and white oak vanities add warmth as well.

This farmhouse designed by our Virginia interior design studio showcases custom, traditional style with modern accents. The laundry room was given an interesting interplay of patterns and texture with a grey mosaic tile backsplash and printed tiled flooring. The dark cabinetry provides adequate storage and style. All the bathrooms are bathed in light palettes with hints of coastal color, while the mudroom features a grey and wood palette with practical built-in cabinets and cubbies. Project Description: Step into the embrace of nature with our latest bathroom design, "Jungle Retreat." This expansive bathroom is a harmonious fusion of luxury, functionality, and natural elements inspired by the lush greenery of the jungle. Bespoke His and Hers Black Marble Porcelain Basins: The focal point of the space is a his & hers bespoke black marble porcelain basin atop a 160cm double drawer basin unit crafted in Italy. The real wood veneer with fluted detailing adds a touch of sophistication and organic charm to the design. Brushed Brass Wall-Mounted Basin Mixers: Wall-mounted basin mixers in brushed brass with scrolled detailing on the handles provide a luxurious touch, creating a visual link to the inspiration drawn from the jungle. The juxtaposition of black marble and brushed brass adds a layer of opulence. Jungle and Nature Inspiration: The design draws inspiration from the jungle and nature, incorporating greens, wood elements, and stone components. The overall palette reflects the serenity and vibrancy found in natural surroundings. Spacious Walk-In Shower: A generously sized walk-in shower is a centrepiece, featuring tiled flooring and a rain shower. The design includes niches for toiletry storage, ensuring a clutter-free environment and adding functionality to the space. Floating Toilet and Basin Unit: Both the toilet and basin unit float above the floor, contributing to the contemporary and open feel of the bathroom. This design choice enhances the sense of space and allows for easy maintenance. Natural Light and Large Window: A large window allows ample natural light to flood the space, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The connection with the outdoors brings an additional layer of tranquillity to the design. Concrete Pattern Tiles in Green Tone: Wall and floor tiles feature a concrete pattern in a calming green tone, echoing the lush foliage of the jungle. This choice not only adds visual interest but also contributes to the overall theme of nature. Linear Wood Feature Tile Panel: A linear wood feature tile panel, offset behind the basin unit, creates a cohesive and matching look. It’s always a blessing when your clients become friends - and that’s exactly what blossomed out of this two-phase remodel (along with three transformed spaces!). These clients were such a joy to work with and made what, at times, was a challenging job feel seamless. This project consisted of two phases, the first being a reconfiguration and update of their master bathroom, guest bathroom, and hallway closets, and the second a kitchen remodel. In keeping with the style of the home, we decided to run with what we called “traditional with farmhouse charm” – warm wood tones, cement tile, traditional patterns, and you can’t forget the pops of color! The master bathroom airs on the masculine side with a mostly black, white, and wood color palette, while the powder room is very feminine with pastel colors. When the bathroom projects were wrapped, it didn’t take long before we moved on to the kitchen. The kitchen already had a nice flow, so we didn’t need to move any plumbing or appliances. Instead, we just gave it the facelift it deserved! We wanted to continue the farmhouse charm and landed on a gorgeous terracotta and ceramic hand-painted tile for the backsplash, concrete look-alike quartz countertops, and two-toned cabinets while keeping the existing hardwood floors. We also removed some upper cabinets that blocked the view from the kitchen into the dining and living room area, resulting in a coveted open concept floor plan. Our clients have always loved to entertain, but now with the remodel complete, they are hosting more than ever, enjoying every second they have in their home. --- Project designed by interior design studio Kimberlee Marie Interiors.
