This ideabook has things we have bought (umbrella/furniture etc) and things we want to incorporate into backyard design
Pool/patio targeted for completion in mid-June 2017
General Style/Feel
We tend to like clean lines, leaning toward contemporary but not hardcore modernist, and like an upscale but informal vibe.
In-Ground Pool
We are planning to have a lagoon style pool approx 42 ft total length x 32 ft (width of shallow end) x 18ft (width of deep end)
Pool will be a salt water liner pool installed by Easton Pool and Spa
Would like to incorporate a diving rock, or even better, possibly a raised wall on the deep end with integrated sheeting waterfall/water feature
Fencing
Backyard will be fenced around perimeter (white vinyl gates/vinyl fencing partway down the sides, switching to black mesh in mid-side and running black mesh across back line of yard)
We have an estimate from and plan to use Fences by Steven F Panek
Patio
We like Cambridge Ledgestone XL 3-piece pavers in grey (textured surface, not flat)
We have J&D Associates from Milford lined up to install patio the second week of June
Firepit–purchased 44-inch square fire pit (natural gas line to be installed)–black granite top with black powder coated sides
Furniture–purchased 4 chaises, end table, 57x45 dining table seating up to 8, 11ft cantilever umbrella
Need to figure out patio design to address several desires/requirements including:
Thoughtful layout of patio area to encompass fire pit with L-shaped stone wall seating, space for dining area, chaises, etc and ample “elbow room” while keeping unusable or dead space to a minimum–want plenty of room but don’t want to have an excessive amount of patio either. Thinking of concentrating much of this on side of pool closest to the house? Do we still need a 3-4 foot wide patio path around the far side of the pool?? Contrasting color pavers to create “border” around edge?
Figure out where to locate fire pit/seating (far side of pool near corner?)–will need to run natural gas line to this
Develop a cost effective scheme for attractive landscape lighting–make backyard safe and attractive at night. Integrated lights into fire pit seating wall? Uplighting on trees/shrubs in backyard? Other parts of patio?
Where to locate pool equipment and how to conceal it?
What to do about bulkhead and how to minimize it/work around it?
Plantings along interior side of fencing to “soften” the look?
Other planting suggestions to enhance look of pool area/backyard? Low maintenance, low to no debris
Also..want to lay out the plan in such as way that it could allow for future poolhouse addition which would replace existing screened porch at back of house and minimize throwaway work/re-work. It might mean some elements are positioned a little further away from the existing porch, further than we would have if we did not have a possible addition in the works?
Plan for where to move Grill…outdoor grill island down the road?

Our first pass at design sketch on our plot plan. Was thinking fire pit in back left corner but are open to suggestions! Note roofline on the porch of the back left corner of house appears larger than it currently is--sketch depicts approx 26x19, but is currently 14x19 screened porch. Would like to factor this into design to minimize re-work if/when "poolhouse" addition is built to replace existing porch.
Cool look, like string lights and lighting of the arbor vitae although our arbs will be outside the fenced yard area.
