Thank you - i see now - we added towels as a decorative touch to the built in cubbiesI. I think the door handle was installed on that side because it opens up to the bigger space of the room - it's easier to get in and out of the shower a bit more from that side. I completely see your point, it's not functional to grab a towel when you get out of the shower. The towels are more staged to look pretty at all times and (if i remember) the towels they used on a daily basis were on hooks. It's been awhile. Great question, I hope this helped answer the question. Handle was installed for easier entry - towels were placed as decorations and not as function.
