I would not wainscot that wall. It doesn't suit the style of the fireplace.

If you're looking to add texture to your wall there are other kinds of paneling you could use to make the room look modern and match the stone of the fireplace.

You can try a quick search on instagram and pinterest for ideas and edit them down to your home style.

Wainscoting beside your fireplace will greatly limit your design choices. Better to decide what furnishings you will have in the room then what pieces would speak to those looks. What style furniture are you contemplating?

Agreed. I’d avoid wainscoting.
Ship lap will better suit the space. I would do a vertical format
