Hi mydreamhome! Thanks for your good question - I believe you are referring to the cabinets immediately adjoining the fireplace to its left, yes? Those are definitely set back by a few inches. That gives the cabinet the ability to "die into" the side of the fireplace, which is a nice clean way to stop that run.
We like to be conscious of hierarchy in the various elements we are using, meaning that more important things get emphasized - in this case, that's the fireplace, and setting the cabinets back helps tell that story.

We are building an all marble fireplace mantel and are trying to figure out whether similar cabinets on either side will work as well as they do in your project highlighting a brick fireplace.
