If a chaise is appealing but you're worried about about how big it may be; maybe you could try a chair and matching ottoman. That way you can move the ottoman around, use it for additional seating and pull it up for cozy reading. Watch scale, look for cleaner simple lines, no big bulky rolled arms so you can save the space for ample seating. We used to have a seating area in our 2 story home. I had set up a drink cart rather than making the trek downstairs.
