I look at color first to narrow down the selection, be sure to look at colors in the same light as the setting. Once the appropriate colors are chosen...the next variable is solid vs. pattern. If a pattern seems right, then I think about geometric or repeating vs. a more random look. If solid is chosen, the next decision is the texture/finish of the material. From then on...it gets very subjective. Be sure to consider the use of the piece regarding the need for stain resistance, ease of cleaning, and wear properties.
