Whether such a bed setting is comfortable is quite subjective and is often dependent on one's cultural background, which influences the type of bed you are used to sleeping on. Modern western cultures are more adapted to thicker and typically softer mattresses that could be constructed of spring coil, foam etc., and as such they may find sleeping on futons on tatami mats to be too hard for their comfort. Though, I have known many people who made the transition without any issues, with many claiming to have benefited from it orthopaedically sleeping on a firmer bed.
