How many cars do you have in your household?

For some people, having a car is crucial in order to take their kids to school, do the weekly groceries or commute to work.

For others, a car isn’t a necessity, but more of a convenience purchased to use for outings on the weekends or the occasional IKEA trip(!).

In your household, how dependent are you on your car(s)? Do you live far away and need a car for every family member, or do you live in the city and have no need for a car?

We have two, and we absolutely do not need two. We are within walking distance of most essentials, but do want a car to get to the big city, wineries, country markets, and to just get away for a weekend. Why do we have two? Because, my whole life, I wanted a little red two-seater sports car. Now I have one. And I'm going to enjoy it while I can!

I have to have a car to get to work, our public transport is so poor. I have had my car for 3 years and 9 months I have done 11000 kilometres in that time. I rarely use it on weekends or holidays, I walk to shops etc. my husband also needs a car to get to work as no public transport to his work. We tend to use his on weekend mainly as we have tandem car parking and mine is always in front. I drive a Suzuki swift, I fill it up about every 4-6 weeks, it is a bit of a joke really. When we retire we will go to one car I presume

Two cars for us and both necessary. We live semi rural with no public transport and only a deli/ takeaway within walking distance. Kids catch a school bus everyday which is great as I work in the opposite direction to their school.

We have four. Hubby is a kidney specialist and can easily visit at least three different hospitals per day, seven days a week, and then, of course, needs to be able to get in quickly in emergencies. I need one for general running around as well as for work as it would take me 90 minutes by public transport (walk, bus, train, tram and another walk) as opposed to 30 minutes. Finally both boys are adults but still live at home even if the older one is in Adelaide for Uni semesters for the majority of the year...

I know a family who have three kids and have survived in Sydney for years without buying a car. I stand in awe at that. I use my car every day, pretty much.

It depends where they are in Sydney. Some parts have little to no public transport, especially after 5 pm. Makes it hard for hospitality workers, nurses, etc.

We have 2 - We're only a family of 4; don't really think we could get away with a single car. We alternate kids pick up and drop off to school (too young to go on their own at the moment); Both need to drive for work from time to time. We have 1 small 4 seat convertible "date car" and a 7 seater for family trips, towing the camper, taking kids, dog and bikes to the park and picking up extra kids and grandparents from the airport. Would be great to drop a car but don't see it in our immediate future...
