To prevent dust from invading your living spaces, eliminating dust at the source is the best way to keep from inhaling these hazardous materials. Ask your contractor, if you are contacting a pro, about their dust control plan. Make sure they are a clean contractor, using preventative tools to make sure dust is contained or even eliminated.
