Home Automation - prewiring

I am looking at a home automation system - either Vantage, Savant or Wiser (From schneider). I have commenced with my new build and want to ensure my prewire will support what ever system I go with. Given with my current limited budget and build cost overruns, I will have to add additional components in stages, but I want to ensure appropriate prewire is installed in advance. Will Cat6 wiring support all of the above systems or is there specialised wiring for each system? Also do you need specialised lightbulbs for each of the systems or can you use standard LED bulbs? Any advise would be welcome.

Rethink this idea. With a limited budget and cost overruns, you are making an unwise financial decision to install something that is an "extra" by most people's standards. Also, whatever system that is the latest thing today, may be outdated due to emerging technology tomorrow.

I disagree with respected commenter above.

I strongly believe that having the correct provisions will ensure your house is ready for any future technology you might want to install. Having no provisions you will have to find ways to pull cable in the future, or go with less reliable wireless products.

We have experienced this with so many clients. At first they install the bare minimum, but once the house is completed and they have some funds to spare, they can easily upgrade if they have the right provisions.

Feel free to email me at nicos@qioto.com and I can provide some advise if you wish. No obligation of course...

Of course you want it prewired. Our electrician knew what to do, we just had to tell him where we wanted to store the components. All the wires were hanging out of the wall for awhile while we found time to get the stuff installed. It didn't seem to be a big deal to them and I don't think we paid extra for it.

Always get everything pre-wired. Pulling extra wire in areas for speakers to add later on. Or Cat6 for other equipment later. HDMI is important to consider as well. Extra wire first, equipment can always be added later as the budget allows. Good luck on your project and I hope you get great people to help you on this project.

I'm sure you're well underway with your project, but pre-wiring should be a necessity for every project that allows it. Wiring and cabling is fairly inexpensive. In this industry with changing technology, we'll never be able to future proof anything. But being proactive and trying to will make anyone's life so much easier in the future when they go to upgrade or add new equipment.
