Definitely agree with Fleur here. Re pointing it would make it look wonders better and then finish with a decent surround.

Thanks so much all. I wasn't sure if repointing would make a huge difference but glad you think it will.

Yes repoint & then the actual inside if not going to use can paint in a nice colour, put in some flowers or candles etc.

I don't know if you've done this already but make sure the mortar is an appropriate colour for the period. I made this mistake and was told the modern grey would fade but it hasn't.

Re-point, consider a chunky beam style mantel with an anqique mirror above and similar vintage accesories around the hearth. That's if that's the look you are after.
