I don't know if you could get the same effect. The use of a stencil allows you to build up the pattern, not embed it into the plaster like a roller might.
Ohh! So, let me see if I understand..? Do you sort of press a stencil into a built up section of plaster and let the plaster push through? I know I sound totally ignorant on this; but, I do LOVE this look!
Not exactly. You have to build up the surface starting with a slight scratchcoat and then in stages apply specialty plaster through stencil. There is trowel work also after you remove the stencil. It is not possible to describe technique entirely. If you have a grasp on troweling, you can create subtle textures as you go. It's a 5 step process....takes a lot of practice!
