If you choose wood floors you will still buy carpet, it will just be in smaller pieces. It is really up to you. Decide which look and which degree of comfort you want and go from there.
In cooler climates, cork can be a warm "wood" option that doesn't leave you feeling like you have hard, cold flooring. As for carpet as "acceptable", it is up to you. If you like carpet then purchase carpet. If you are looking to sell the house in the next 5 years, then you will want to talk with a local realtor about what is selling in your area and what is being "negotiated" out of a sale price.
Realtors will let you know what they hear from clients when to walk them through a property. Many people negotiate carpets out of the purchase and others are more than happy with carpets.
The decisions is yours and it depends on your tastes and how long you plan to live there.
