This renovation was for a family whose Kitchen is the heart of the home. The project goals were to create a warm, inviting space, comfortable for entertaining and every day use. Highlights of the Kitchen include the custom copper range hood and copper backsplash, beautiful distressed cream cabinetry and a built-in banquette overlooking the Magothy River. This end of the kitchen was originally walled off into two separate rooms. A smaller room was on the left which was a larder and the right had a small eating area for servants., hence the two different sized windows. I created a large sweeping curved to over a support beam that was structurally required once the walls were removed and then completed the curve with custom designed brackets. The custom built banquette has a leather seat and fabric back. The table I designed and a local worker made it from a felled walnut tree on the property.

It is sometimes a surprise what beauty can lurk under the surface of a room. A client with a 1970s kitchen and eat-in area cut up by an unwieldy peninsula was desperate for it to reflect her love of all things English-and-French-Manor-Home. Working closely with my client, we removed the peninsula in favor of a lovely free-standing island that we painted a shade of French Blue. This is topped with Old World sink hardware (note the ceramic HOT and COLD medallions on the faucets!) and a gorgeous marble counter with a very special edge profile that evokes an antique French Boulangerie counter from the 1910s. Pendants with patinaed metal shades over the island further the charming Old World feel. Handmade white and blue tiles laid in a quilted diamond pattern cover the backsplash, and the remainder of the cabinetry at the perimeter is in a warm cream tone. The eat-in near the fireplace got a cozy treatment with custom seat cushions and window seat bench cushions in a classic blue-and-white Toile de Jouy matching the island stools. The nearby living room got a similar treatment. We removed dark wood paneling and dark carpeting in favor of a light sky blue wall and lighter wood flooring. A new rug with the appearance of an heirloom, a new grand-scaled sofa, and some of my client’s precious antiques helped take the room from 70s rec room to English Sitting Room. The focal point of the kitchen is the french doors leading to the backyard. These were custom made to fit the narrow opening where a window once was. The cabinets are Merillat Classic, Bellingham Maple doors, painted in cotton with Tuscan glaze. Carrara Marble counter-tops. White subway tile. Samsung refrigerator, range and microwave in stainless finish. Bosch 24" dishwasher. Products we used: Pfister Wheaton Tuscan Bronze one-handle pull down kitchen faucet (#F-529-7WHY). Liberty Hardware cabinet pulls and knobs in rubbed bronze finish. Paint colors used: Benjamin Moore Monterey White HC-27

Butler's pantries rarely have tall ceilings or access to natural light. We made the most of this one's unique features by incorporating glass cabinetry doors that capture and reflect light while opening up views to the owner's stunning crystal barware.
