Architecture: One SEED Architecture + Interiors (www.oneseed.ca) Photo: Martin Knowles Photo Media Builder: Vertical Grain Projects Multigenerational Vancouver Special Reno #MGvancouverspecial Vancouver, BC Previous Project Next Project 2 780 SF Interior and Exterior Renovation We are very excited about the conversion of this Vancouver Special in East Van’s Renfrew-Collingwood area, zoned RS-1, into a contemporary multigenerational home. It will incorporate two generations immediately, with separate suites for the home owners and their parents, and will be flexible enough to accommodate the next generation as well, when the owners have children of their own. During the design process we addressed the needs of each group and took special care that each suite was designed with lots of light, high ceilings, and large rooms.

This client came to us with a unique challenge: create a modern design that matches her fun and funky personality but to make it as "green" and chemical free as possible. We rose to the challenge, researching the best options for sustainable, green and chemical free furnishings. The upholstery pieces are made from sustainable and chemical free materials, the dining table is made of sustainable wood with a chemical free finish. The rugs are from a fair-trade company that supports education for women in India. The client had hired a Feng Shui expert to provide her with a report which we used to design the space. The wallpaper behind the living room sofa is custom designed and custom-made. It is a map made up of hundred of small photos that the homeowner provided to us. It represents the area in her home that will bring travel and connect her to the people she loves. The large, colorful art piece in the dining area is hung in the area of the home that will bring joy around family and children. The hearts and pink/red colored wallpaper in the den will evoke love and relationships. The client has a colorful, fun personality and we wanted to infuse the design with it. A white backdrop allows all of the pinks, reds, navy blues and turquoises to pop, creating a lively, modern feeling. The textures in the floor and wall coverings and in the fabrics create a lived in, collected feeling and add a touch of bohemian chic style. The new modern cable and walnut stair banister is in keeping with the original modern feel of the row house and keeps the narrow staircase from feeling tight and closed in. This was a fun, creative and unique project for us. This particular client was one of Olamar's first clients eight years ago when we first opened our doors. At that time the house was nothing but a condemned shell that the client renovated, with our assistance. New Oak and White closed string staircase. The first section has white closed risers with tread lighting to create that floating effect but enabling our client to have storage behind it. The top section is open riser with glass sub-risers to allow the natural light to flood through to the hall way from the large window on the half landing.

Expansive straight lines define this modern staircase, which features natural/blond hues Hickory steps and stringers that match the linear and smooth hand rail. The stairway's horizontal black rails and symmetrically spaced vertical balusters, allow for plenty of natural light to travel throughout the open stairwell and into the adjacent open areas. This staircase is a truly special project to come out of the MW Design Workshop. We worked extensively with the clients, architect, interior designer, builder, and other trades to achieve this fully integrated feature in the home. The challenge we had was to create a stunning, aesthetically pleasing stair using MPP – a structural mass timber product developed locally here in Oregon. We used 3D modelling to incorporate the complex interactions between the CNC-milled MPP treads, water-jet cut and LED lit bookcase, and rolled steel handrail with the rest of the built structure. The design goal of this large scale remodel was to open up the compartmentalized floor plan, install a new kitchen with a statement counter-top that doubled as art. The Client also wanted new flooring, paint, light fixtures, furniture, stairs and to update an old guest bathroom. The Coastal Modern finishes and accessories are a perfect fit to compliment canal living at it's finest.
