This custom new construction home located in Fox Trail, Illinois was designed for a sizeable family who do a lot of extended family entertaining. There was a strong need to have the ability to entertain large groups and the family cooks together. The family is of Indian descent and because of this there were a lot of functional requirements including thoughtful solutions for dry storage and spices. The architecture of this project is more modern aesthetic, so the kitchen design followed suit. The home sits on a wooded site and has a pool and lots of glass. Taking cues from the beautiful site, O’Brien Harris Cabinetry in Chicago focused the design on bringing the outdoors in with the goal of achieving an organic feel to the room. They used solid walnut timber with a very natural stain so the grain of the wood comes through. There is a very integrated feeling to the kitchen. The volume of the space really opens up when you get to the kitchen. The brief for this unique kitchen was for it to be ‘a huge piece of furniture’. Well….. challenge accepted. To achieve this goal, we knew that we needed to approach the design from the details outwards, so we started with the cabinet doors. As the kitchen was to be over three levels rather than the traditional two, and because we wanted to articulate the idea of ‘furniture’ rather than ‘kitchen cabinets’, we designed three complimentary cabinet doors, each with their own personalities. Door pulls and pan hooks were made from beautiful hexagonal brass rods, and drawers were lined for cutlery, utensils and cookware. A slim shelf above the splashback provided a place for kitchen essentials like salt and oil. The mid-level of the kitchen was kept clean and uncluttered by means of our signature F+B ‘School House’ off-white lacquer, so that the wood didn’t feel overpowering. But the main event is the truss shelf that spans the open side of the kitchen like a portal frame. This beautifully detailed piece of Japanese-inspired design gives space for the client’s collection of Asian ceramics, and for our bespoke Japanese shoji paper lanterns, which light the space. This kitchen renovation was part of a larger, extensive project that merged two units into one at a Central West End condominium building. The kitchen design contrasts the existing concrete of the building structure with a refined palette of cherry, oak, and polished natural stone. Cherry casework at the perimeter of the kitchen conceals mechanical systems and provides storage and display space. The dropped ceiling — clad in locally sourced white oak — provides a textural grain towards the Basilica and conceals mechanical systems. Integrated LED strip lighting further emphasizes the directionality towards the Basilica. Polished, vein-cut quartzite at the countertops and backsplash contrasts with the exposed concrete column and ceiling. The adjacent eating area is anchored by a long, wall–mounted cherry credenza. A pendant light hanging above the table provides a soft luminosity and adds a touch of color, while views to the south bring the scale of the city into the condominium. ©Alise O’Brien Photography

It has warm wood cabinetry, beige quartz countertops, quartz with a soapstone look on the island, beige subway tile. The kitchen is open to an adjacent dining space, a casual family room, and the dining room. It is also located near the screened porch. The passthrough under the wine rack right provides easy access to the dining room and a good flow for entertaining.

The kitchen redesign made room for a full size breakfast room, while the extended countertop on the island allows for up to five extra seats. A light fixture by Varaluz provides light and beauty to the popular gathering spot. The refinished vintage chairs finish the space with a nod to the mid-century style of the home.

The original family room was segregated from the kitchen and dining areas. A wall of bookshelves divided the family room from the formal dining room. The bookshelves were replaced with a limestone structure which houses a dual-sided Town and Country fireplace that can be enjoyed from the family room, formal dining room and kitchen, while subtly separating the living and dining spaces.
