Open and spacious kitchen layout was designed to encourage free flow between all spaces as well as functionality. A walkthrough pantry/mud room adjacent to the kitchen offers additional counter and shelving space to hide appliances and coral messes. Open style shelving keep functional and decorative items such as glasses and bowls withing easy reach.

Our St. Pete studio gave this gorgeous home a beautiful makeover with a neutral color palette that nicely highlights the thoughtful design details. We added cottage-style barn doors for the bathroom giving it an elegant charm that heightens the stunning designs of the space. In the kitchen, we used the classic black and white theme, punctuated with organic elements like plants and wooden shelves that create a warm, lived-in feel. We added an attractive area rug in the dining room along with beautiful artwork and statement lighting to create visual interest. The high-rise condo owner wanted a moody modern feel throughout. This kitchen did not benefit from natural light but with natural materials and the open flow, we were able to create a clean but moody feel with the contrast of black cabinets and a light quartzite for counters and backsplash. After opening the walls between the living, dining, and kitchen we decided to raise and level the ceilings for a continuous lofty feel. The Kitchen redesign also included a hidden stackable custom laundry cabinet, which allowed for the addition of the Ensuite Guest Bath.

A small and dysfunctional kitchen was transformed in three luxury zones - cook, social, and relax. The brief was "not a white kitchen" and we delivered - a black kitchen with feature rose gold metallic trims. A wall was removed, a door was closed up, he original kitchen was entirely removed and the floor plan changed dramatically. This luxurious kitchen features dual ovens - in black and rose gold from SMEG - two dishwashers, 3m wide integrated cabinetry with two bi-fold door tea/coffee stations and appliance centres - with stone countertops inside the cupboards. The cook top area has a dramatic rose gold metal splashback with strip lit niche below the integrated rangehood. Another wall is entirely Sierra Leone stone, same as the counter tops.

This gem of a house was built in the 1950s, when its neighborhood undoubtedly felt remote. The university footprint has expanded in the 70 years since, however, and today this home sits on prime real estate—easy biking and reasonable walking distance to campus. When it went up for sale in 2017, it was largely unaltered. Our clients purchased it to renovate and resell, and while we all knew we'd need to add square footage to make it profitable, we also wanted to respect the neighborhood and the house’s own history. Swedes have a word that means “just the right amount”: lagom. It is a guiding philosophy for us at SYH, and especially applied in this renovation. Part of the soul of this house was about living in just the right amount of space. Super sizing wasn’t a thing in 1950s America. So, the solution emerged: keep the original rectangle, but add an L off the back. With no owner to design with and for, SYH created a layout to appeal to the masses. All public spaces are the back of the home--the new addition that extends into the property’s expansive backyard. A den and four smallish bedrooms are atypically located in the front of the house, in the original 1500 square feet. Lagom is behind that choice: conserve space in the rooms where you spend most of your time with your eyes shut. Put money and square footage toward the spaces in which you mostly have your eyes open. In the studio, we started calling this project the Mullet Ranch—business up front, party in the back. The front has a sleek but quiet effect, mimicking its original low-profile architecture street-side. It’s very Hoosier of us to keep appearances modest, we think. But get around to the back, and surprise! lofted ceilings and walls of windows. Gorgeous.

In this kitchen, we wanted to tie in the classic black and white palette to the homes character. To do so, the home's original molding details were recreated throughout crown molding and doorways. We incorporated brushed brass and matte black hardware, as well as sand-in-place oak flooring. Our client wanted to continue her tradition of giving her grandchildren weekly gourmet cooking and baking lessons. A paneled refrigerator was designed into the back nook of the kitchen, opening up treasured countertop space for cooking, prepping, and gourmet baked-good preparation. The lowered countertop area create an ideal baking station. To make use of the countertop space, we installed a large 3' galley workstation with dry dock. An elegant gloss black and brass range ties into the classic charm of this 1910's bungalow. The adjacent dining nook is the perfect place for morning coffee and a fresh baked croissant.
