Michael K. Wilkinson The kitchen was small, outdated, and dark. To provide a better connection to the adjacent dining room, we enlarged the opening between the kitchen and dining room and installed a peninsula countertop that has seating on one side. This is an apartment building with concrete ceilings, so we had to lower the kitchen ceiling 10 inches in order to install recessed lights. The apartment has soaring 9-foot 3-inch ceiling heights, so the space does not feel small. The kitchen also has a new combination paddle fan/light. The drum shape is echoed in the pendant lights and the dining room fixture. All of the lights are on dimmers, something we prefer because it allows our clients to create a range of moods. There is also lighting inside the four glass cabinet doors above the range. To meet code, we had to relocate the electrical panel inside kitchen to the dining room wall. The owner was able to cover it with art work. The owner selected cherry cabinets in a natural finish, topped with contrasting Piracema White granite. The backsplash throughout the kitchen is gray glass subway tile. Behind the stove, the designer added some interest by adding blue tiles, but rotating the 4-inch tiles at a 45-degree angle. Due to size of the kitchen, the owner opted for a narrow 18-inch dishwasher and a 24-inch counter-depth refrigerator. The stove, however, is a standard 30-inch with a microwave above. The new 2 ¼-inch rift and quarter white oak boards were stained and finished along with the existing floors in the apartment for a seamless look.

There’s nothing as wonderful as walking into a mid-century gem with clients who love the character of their new home. Our goal for this project was to incorporate the mid-century bones of this home into a new design that would better meet the contemporary needs of our clients. We started by taking down the walls that had separated this kitchen from the rest of the home and creating a welcoming space that blended seamlessly with the new open concept. The new kitchen design was a win for our clients with increased storage, more work surfaces, and a peninsula with plenty of seating. We utilized wood finishes through out this space with light wood flooring, medium-tones on the cabinetry, and darker wood accents throughout giving us a beautiful balance and a calm backdrop. This home had beautiful horizontal lines that we wanted to accentuate, so we selected a dark wood finish for the central beam and tied it in with the dark finish on the wood fireplace mantel and the stair handrail to emphasize the horizontal features. But we never miss an opportunity for a fun mid-century pop, and this home provided plenty of inspiration! The boomerang hardware on the cabinets and escher backsplash tiles give us great geometric elements to break up the clean lines of the rest of the space. One of our favorite features of this home was the original plaster ceilings with the custom hand troweled texture. We knew from the beginning that this was an element we wanted to maintain and accentuate, so when we opened up the kitchen and added recessed lighting we reached out to a local plaster artisan to carry the texture throughout the space, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. This design brings together the mid-century aesthetics of clean lines and fun patterns with the modern-day functionality our clients were looking for in their new kitchen.

Dark wood cabinets are juxtaposed with a light Terrazo floor in this contemporary u-shaped kitchen. This award-winning classic + transitional + retro kitchen remodel was part of multi-room home remodeling and interior design project. The clients wanted to include some mid-century modern elements, but didn't want the room to feel like a capsule space. We used classic slab door style kitchen cabinets in a cherry finish and a muted aqua color palette in the finishes and custom elements. Another goal was to create a space that would easily convert from small family meals to large holiday gatherings. To accommodate this request, we added a custom booth on the back of the peninsula, a large bar/buffet, a vintage teak table with butterfly leaves, and extra seating bench. To top it off, we added the glamorous gold leaf oversized pendant, which steals the show without being out of proportion to the space.
