This growing family was looking for a larger, more functional space to prep their food, cook and entertain in their 1910 NE Minneapolis home. A new floorplan was created by analyzing the way the homeowners use their home. Their large urban garden provides them with an abundance of fresh produce which can now be harvested, brought in through the back door, and then cleaned in the new Kohler prep sink closest to the back door. An old, unusable staircase to the basement was removed to capture more square footage for a larger kitchen space and a better planned back entry area. A mudroom with bench/shoe closet was configured at the back door and the Stonepeak Quartzite tile keeps dirt from boots out of the cooking area. Next in line of function was storage. The refrigerator and pantry areas were moved so they are now across from the prep and cooking areas. New cherry cabinetry in the Waverly door style and floating shelves were provided by Crystal Cabinets. Finally, the kitchen was opened up to the dining room, creating an eat-in area and designated entertainment area. A new Richlin vinyl double-hung pocket window replaced the old window on the southwest wall of the mudroom. The overall style is in line with the style and age of the home. The wood and stain colors were chosen to highlight the rest of the original woodwork in the house. A slight rustic feel was added through a highlight glaze on the cabinets. A natural color palette with muted tones – brown, green and soft white- create a modern fresh feel while paying homage to the character of the home and the homeowners’ earthy style.

What had been an outdated and dark space with old appliances, is now a bright, stylish and textural open-floor plan kitchen and dining space. Before the gut remodel, the spaces lacked the cool Midcentury style the homeowners craved. Distinctive Kitchens was brought in to help choose finishes--tile backsplash and floors, sink, faucet, lighting, countertops and cabinet hardware. The goal was to bring the style and flare of the Midcentury Modern aesthetic back to the home using a neutral palette and lots of texture. The adjacent dining room was also part of the design, because the rooms have such a strong relationship to each other. We consulted on furniture and lighting in that room, making sure the two light fixtures (one over the sink, the other over the dining table) didn't compete for attention. It is all in the details! I worked hard with Heidi Fusik Interiors and the homeowner to make the most of this small space. Behind these beautiful 3 ply bamboo doors there is a space for everything including trash and recycling, spices, cutting boards and sheet pans, pots, pans, plates and even the cat food! This kitchen remodel gives a nod to the soft mid-century modern style of the house, while updating it to contemporary styles. The vertical grain cypress cabinets are accented with tall white storage cabinets on each side of the range. The white quartz countertops and large format (13" x 40") porcelain tile complete the transformation.

This kitchen design incorporates beautiful materials, sleek contemporary lines, and a well-planned layout to create a space that is as beautiful as the coastal view. The open plan design incorporates the kitchen separated from the living area by a peninsula, the adjacent dining area with a beverage bar, and a pantry with customized storage. The kitchen remodel incorporates Bosch appliances throughout, a Faber custom hood insert, and a Fagor undercabinet wine refrigerator in the beverage bar. The main cabinetry is Masterbrand Diamond Vibe flat panel cabinets in a warm wood finish, accented by Luxury Line Extra White finish cabinetry for the beverage bar. A walk-in pantry features white cabinetry with glass front upper cabinets for displaying glassware, and built-in shelves for extra storage. This kitchen design is the perfect place to prepare favorite meals in a well organized kitchen, and relax with family and friends all while appreciating the surrounding coastal view. The top section of this tall pantry cabinet was created to provide storage for trays, bakeware, baskets, platters, display pieces, etc. Tay dividers and additional horizontal shelves were used to organize the space.

In this kitchen, Medallion Gold Full Overlay Maple cabinets in the door style Madison Raised Panel with Harvest Bronze with Ebony Glaze and Highlights finish. The Wine bar furniture piece is Medallion Brookhill Raised Panel with White Chocolate Classic Paint finish with Mocha Highlights. The countertop is Cambria Bradshaw Quartz in 3cm with ledge edge and 4” backsplash on coffee bar. The backsplash is Honed Durango 4 x 4, 3 x 6 Harlequin Glass Mosaic 1 x 1 accent tile, Slate Radiance color: Cactus. Pewter 2 x 2 Pinnalce Dots; 1 x 1 Pinnacle Buttons and brushed nickel soho pencil border. Seagull Stone Street in Brushed Nickel pendant lights. Blanco single bowl Anthracite sink and Moen Brantford pull out spray faucet in spot resistant stainless. Flooring is Traiversa Applewood Frosted Coffee vinyl.

The remodel took traffic flow and appliance placement into consideration. The refrigerator was relocated to an area closer to the sink and out of the flow of traffic. Recessed lighting and under-cabinet lighting now flood the kitchen with warm light. The closet pantry and a half wall between the family room and kitchen were removed and a peninsular with seating area was added to provide a large work surface, storage on both sides and shelving with baskets to store homework, craft items and books. Opening this area up provided a welcoming spot for friends and family to gather when entertaining. The microwave was placed at a height that was safe and convenient for the whole family. Cabinets taken to the ceiling, large drawers, pantry roll-outs and a corner lazy susan have helped make this kitchen a pleasure to gather as a family.

This end of the kitchen is the workhorse. Most of the appliances were kept within the original kitchen footprint to keep costs down. The range was in the corner with little prep space on either side. Now, it's on an exterior wall which allows the ventilation to work like a dream, there is abundant countertop space on both sides and all the tools for cooking are within easy reach. The sink was moved under the window and because of the header, a flyover panel in the same material of the cabinets was added to connect the far wall cabinet to the rest of the space.
