A family of five, who lives in a prestigious McLean neighborhood, was looking to renovate and upgrade their 20-year-old kitchen. Goals of the renovation were to move the cooktop out of the island, install all professional-quality appliances, achieve better traffic flow and update the appearance of the space. The plan was to give a French country look to this kitchen, by carrying the overall soft and creamy color scheme of main floor furniture in the new kitchen. As such, the adjacent family room had to become a significant part of the remodel. The back wall of the kitchen is now occupied by 48” professional range under a custom wood hood. A new tower style refrigerator covered in matching wood panels is placed at the end of the run, just create more work space on both sides of the stove. The large contrasting Island in a dark chocolate finish now offers a second dishwasher, a beverage center and built in microwave. It also serves as a large buffet style counter space and accommodate up to five seats around it. The far wall of the space used to have a bare wall with a 36” fireplace in it. The goal of this renovation was to include all the surrounding walls in the design. Now the entire wall is made of custom cabinets, including display cabinetry on the upper half. The fireplace is wrapped with a matching color mantel and equipped with a big screen TV. Smart use of detailed crown and trim molding are highlights of this space and help bring the two rooms together, as does the porcelain tile floor. The attached family room provides a casual, comfortable space for guest to relax. And the entire space is perfect for family gatherings or entertaining.

This kitchen serves as a pool house kitchen. This allowed for more flexibility in design with a more playful approach. Because it’s not serving as the main or only kitchen we were able to incorporate more display features. At the top of each tall cabinet is located an intricately curved open display with a beaded backdrop. Above the sink is a fun cabinet with chicken wire doors, allowing for more display, while adding an element of interest. A hammered copper farmhouse sink in a base cabinet with acanthus corners and a scrolled valance carry the interest from top to bottom. Disguising a pantry entrance is the tall armoire cabinet to the right. This hidden passage is known as our famous Hideaway.

This Caribbean kitchen is at Deja View Villa, a vacation rental villa in St. John USVI. With open ocean views from both kitchen windows and the 19' hurricane sliding glass door, it was a must to bring the Caribbean colors inside through paint, tile and glass. Blue glass bubble tile is used for the back splash while blue glass pendent lights and decor jars float above the kitchen to show off the height of the vaulted cypress, open beam ceilings. Two spacious granite covered islands provide lots of food prep space and seating. We love mixing the modern mahogany shaker style stained cabinets with the antiqued blue, country style, James Patterson inspired blue painted island. That's right, this custom island is a spin off of author James Patterson's kitchen island. There are three drawers on each side of this blue beauty. The middle drawer is only one window wide. The outer, two level island is literally two levels top and bottom. The seating side of this island is two steps lower than the kitchen side. (Please see other pictures of this project) This allows the island to be bar height on one side and table top height on the other. I combined a metal grate with glass in a few of the upper cabinets for added character. The beam above the kitchen sink helps bridge the gap between upper cabinets. For this client, we made seat covers out of burlap bags for her barstools to go along with the overall look. The sink and (2) dishwashers bump out from the rest of the base cabinetry and take on the look of a furniture piece with carved details.
