This kitchen and breakfast room was inspired by the owners' Scandinavian heritage, as well as by a café they love in Europe. Bookshelves in the kitchen and breakfast room make for easy lingering over a snack and a book. The Heath Ceramics tile backsplash also subtly celebrates the author owner and her love of literature: the tile pattern echoes the spines of books on a bookshelf...All photos by Laurie Black.

Remodel of Living Room, Kitchen, Entry and Garage with additional square footage added to Kitchen and Garage. Remodeled Kitchen with 12×14 kitchen addition. Engineered concrete footings to support kitchen addition on slope tying in to 4 foot extension of Garage. Kitchen features Tiger Wood cabinets with Red Trim designed by owner. Redesign single story entry to two story foyer with large windows and skylights. Living Room Remodel including 4×16 footprint Expansion. Featuring 16 foot sliding glass doors to capture panoramic views of Portland. Garage Expansion 4 x24 anchoring deck and kitchen addition on slope. Build Challenge: Design and build a wrap-around floating fireplace hearth made from granite slab. Special engineering required for living room 16 foot sliding doors.

As with many residents of the Armitage neighborhood in South Minneapolis, the owners of this 1940-built Tudor home love where they live. So much so, they were willing to commit to a large, whole-house remodel in order to stay put. Castle worked diligently with these homeowners to help them realize their ultimate goals for their home. By redesigning the first-floor layout, Castle was able to create a much more open space. Walls previously separating the kitchen and dining room were removed and replaced with more countertop space in the form of a seated peninsula. The kitchen was also updated with new granite countertops, more backsplash tile to match the existing, and partial new cabinetry by The Woodshop of Avon to match existing. New hardwood flooring was installed in the kitchen to match the existing dining room. The size of the dining room was then almost doubled by removing an adjacent first-floor bedroom. A new sunroom was added in the back which opened the space even further. Dixie Caress carpet in the color “Wisteria” was chosen for the sunroom and throughout the 2nd floor. The 2nd floor was given a total makeover with a large dormer addition and a master bedroom suite above the new sunroom. Corbels decorate the exterior while giving support to the overhanging floor of the master bedroom. Now with three bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs, there’s room for everyone, and a wonderful great room on the main floor to go with it. A view of the recycled Blackbutt peninsular bench, with deep drawers conveniently located for plating up meals. Plans are afoot to make a banquette dining corner. The splashback and shelvf style would not have been my personal choice - but it was not to be my kitchen afterall :)
