Architect: Steven Bull, Workshop AD Photography By: Kevin G. Smith “Like the integration of interior with exterior spaces with materials. Like the exterior wood panel details. The interior spaces appear to negotiate the angles of the house well. Takes advantage of treetop location without ostentation.” This project involved the redesign and completion of a partially constructed house on the Upper Hillside in Anchorage, Alaska. Construction of the underlying steel structure had ceased for more than five years, resulting in significant technical and organizational issues that needed to be resolved in order for the home to be completed. Perched above the landscape, the home stretches across the hillside like an extended tree house. An interior atmosphere of natural lightness was introduced to the home. Inspiration was pulled from the surrounding landscape to make the home become part of that landscape and to feel at home in its surroundings. Surfaces throughout the structure share a common language of articulated cladding with walnut panels, stone and concrete. The result is a dissolved separation of the interior and exterior. There was a great need for extensive window and door products that had the required sophistication to make this project complete. And Marvin products were the perfect fit. Tú ya lo eres, lo sientes y tu día a día puede ser así. Cierra los ojos e imaginemos juntos; el calor del hogar, una noche con tus mejores amigos riendo, tomando una copa de vino, el espacio donde ver jugar y crecer a tus hijos, el caminar descalza, ver una película en un día lluvioso. La felicidad es esto, o se acerca bastante. El diseño pone una pequeña y modestisima parte, tu pones el vino , un Legaris por favor, me he enamorado de ese vino…y de tu salón.

Space is not determined by the enclosure but through the idea of space extending past perceived barriers into an expanded form of living indoors and out. Even in this harsh environment, one is able to enjoy this concept through the development of exterior courts which are designed to shade and protect. Reminiscent of the crevices found in our rock formations where one often finds an oasis of life in this environment. DL featured product: DL custom rugs including sculpted Patagonian sheepskin, wool / silk custom graphics and champagne silk galaxy. Custom 11′ live-edge laurel slabwood bench, Trigo bronze smoked acrylic + crocodile embossed leather barstools, polished stainless steel outdoor Pantera bench, special commissioned steel sculpture, metallic leather True Love lounge chair, blackened steel + micro-slab console and fiberglass pool lounges.

Dark earthy ceiling, walls, and floors remind us that we are in a mountain house, yet a reinvented modern take on it all, including many antique relics and found pieces make the home feel collected and one of a kind.
