Succulent flowers are humming bird magnets. This vast hillside in San Anselmo, Northern California, has evolved over the years and is the personal sanctuary of Landscape Designer Eileen Kelly, owner of Dig Your Garden Landscape Design. This sustainable garden also serves as her "living laboratory" where Eileen observes and learns from the habits and growth of her extensive selection of plants. They include hundreds of varieties of low-water plants ranging from California natives to others from South Africa and Australia, and a few exotics from Hawaii and other regions. Succulents have always been one of Eileen's favorites and they co-mingle beautifully throughout the landscape. Several steps were taken to minimize the risk of the deck igniting. Embers like to collect under decks where they can use collected leaf litter as fuel to gain enough heat to burn wood. We prevent that by sealing off the under-side of the deck with concrete hardy board. Next, two layers of irrigated and mulched native, hydration-holding foliage defends the deck from embers. Just one of the many plant groupings comprised of succulents and other low-water plantings that thrive in this Northern California hillside sanctuary. The Cuphea (large firecracker plant) with orange flowers is a non-stop bloomer. the Agave 'Blue Glow' and the Chalk Sticks (Senecio mandraliscae) succulents offer a beautiful contrast with colors and textures. This beautiful, optimally sustainable contemporary home sits on the steep slope of LA's storied Mandeville Canyon. Because flying embers pose the greatest fire danger to homes, we look first to the fire vulnerabilities of a home then create relevant protective elements in the landscape. This was a fairly recent garden that had not fulfilled it's promise. We were called in to create a less formal and less serious landscape more in keeping with the taste of the owner. `The end result is a little "tongue in cheek", and a little "rough and tumble". Our client loved it. The art objects were purchased from Living Green Studios in San Francisco.
