Pro Spotlight: How to Balance Light and Privacy in Your Home
A Red Bank window treatment expert shares tips for creating your ideal environment
PR記事
Who: Elliot Laniado of Window Treats
Where: Red Bank, New Jersey
In his own words: “Most of the light in the room comes from the windows, so window treatments are a very important part of controlling the light.”
Golden and warm, a sunlit room can be irresistible. However, it can be less than appealing at 6 a.m. (for those still snoozing) or if the neighbors can see right in. “Controlling the light is a big topic for people looking for window treatments,” says Elliot Laniado, who owns Window Treats in Red Bank. “People want light during the day, but not too much; at night they want privacy and darkness.” He helps clients select the right window treatments for their needs and style so they can come home to a relaxing space.

Happy highlights. Laniado likes working one-on-one with his clients, helping them create comfortable, functional, appealing spaces using window treatments. “I enjoy being able to help people enhance their lives and make them feel good in their environment,” he says. “I love it when we do an installation and people are beaming. Making people happy is a great part of this job.”
Custom considerations. “When you’re doing custom drapery, you get to choose your own fabric, sizing and almost any style,” Laniado says. “Custom drapery is crisper, more luxurious and more elegant.” He transitioned from ready-made to custom window treatments in 1995, when he founded Window Treats.

1. Try Sheer Treatments
Delicate, semitranslucent window treatments, such as sheer shades and drapes, provide privacy without blocking sunlight. They’re ideal for public living spaces where complete darkness isn’t necessary. A Brooklyn client chose traditional Austrian shades, seen here, to shield her dining and living room from neighbors less than 20 feet away. “The shades give the client privacy while still letting in the light,” Laniado says. “She just leaves them down, as she’s not looking to see outside.”

2. Layer Your Coverings
Laniado suggests layering your window treatments for further versatility. Light and privacy needs often change throughout the day, so your window treatments should too. For example, the mesh shades in this Springlake bedroom offer daytime privacy, while elegant blackout curtains provide bedtime darkness. “The client chose a tone-on-tone striped fabric in a Wedgwood blue for the drapes,” Laniado says, creating a soothing sleep haven.

3. Embrace Smart Shades
Use your tablet or smartphone with automated window treatments to schedule when your shades open and close throughout the day. “You can create a ‘scene’ where the shades open a third of the way in the morning to help you wake up,” Laniado says. You can also program them to close automatically when the sun sets.
A Colts Neck homeowner chose automated, motorized shades for her bedroom, seen here. During the day, sumptuous drapes cascading from gold-leafed medallions provide style and plenty of daylight. “At night, the motorized shades come down and she has complete privacy,” Laniado says.
