Francisco Villarreal, the marketing and communications manager for Strong Tower Renovations, understands the need to create a space that fits your vision and also makes you feel at home once it’s finished. “Your home should function for you,” he says.
Family affair. Villarreal’s father, Eduardo, started Strong Tower Renovations in 2014, drawing on his experience doing home renovations for others since the age of 14. The rest of the family also became involved. “My mother, Blanca, handles everything in the office,” Villarreal says. On his end, Villarreal put his experience to work to manage marketing and communications. “We are a family-owned and -operated business,” he says.
The human aspect. Villarreal says that materials, timelines and logistics are only half the equation in a home remodel. “The other half is the human and emotional side,” he says. For his family, connecting with homeowners and helping them through the roller coaster of a renovation is key. “We’re guiding them through the transition from one way of living to another way to live,” he says.

1. Design for How You Live
Tailor your space to fit your needs. “The end results should work for how you use the space every day,” Villarreal says.
The update of this Houston kitchen took it from dated to modern within the existing footprint. Villarreal installed white countertops, darker floors and new hardware for a more contemporary look. He also made the island smaller. “The homeowner is an empty nester and didn’t need as large an island as before,” he says. Other personalized touches include a TV mount and drawers next to the stove for storage. “She’s big on organization,” Villarreal says.

2. Prioritize What You Love
Include spaces that make it easy for you to pursue hobbies or interests. For these Houston homeowners, that meant transforming the pergola next to their pool into an Asian-inspired yoga studio and workout room to use year-round. “They wanted a dedicated space that was not in their home,” Villarreal says.
Glass walls and doors on all four sides of the once-open pergola now provide protection from the elements while preserving the view. Two water features with customized insets — with a stunning gold betta fish sculpture in one and a rock floor and running water in the other — flank the bench in the center of the room. “They provide fluidity and movement in the space,” Villarreal says.
He also added specific elements the homeowners were excited to include, such as a statement chandelier and a TV. The mirrored door is a finishing touch that reflects sunlight into the space and also provides access to the bathroom.

3. Embrace Your Style
Choose finishes you love rather than what’s popular at the moment. “Your home should resonate with you,” Villarreal says.
These Houston homeowners wanted a dark look for their kitchen. “It’s an unexpected choice, but it works for them,” Villarreal says. He kept the cabinets and floor dark but added white countertops and a white backsplash to provide some contrast. “We also chose a light fixture that was open to bring in more light,” Villarreal says. White finishes for the breakfast nook seating and the fireplace surround in the adjacent family room provide continuity throughout the open space.
