Who: Rylan Harrigan of Timeline Design + Build
Where: Saratoga, California
In his own words: “There’s no other place in the world like Silicon Valley where you can work with such accomplished people.”
As we design and remodel our homes, we’re typically focused on two factors: How will it look and how much will it cost? According to Rylan Harrigan, an integrator at Timeline Design + Build in Saratoga, that focus changes once you’re moved in. “Comfort is a feeling, so it’s hard to visualize. But it’s essential to enjoying your home,” he says. Below, Harrigan shares his tips for long-term comfort that will make you love where you live.

Connecting the dots. Timeline Design + Build was founded by Rylan’s father, Matthew, in 1990. Rylan initially joined the business in high school (when he was primarily focused on a little extra pocket money for the movies). After earning a degree in economics, he rejoined Timeline as an integrator. “My role is to connect people,” he says. “I do my best to see how we could add value to a client’s project, introduce them to the right people and make sure the entire project process moves along.”
Creating strong partnerships. For Harrigan, the best part of working in design-build is the people. “I love being able to connect with incredibly smart and driven people,” he says. “I meet people who are so hardworking and successful, it feels like their days are just a little bit longer.” At Timeline, the design-build team takes the project management burden off already-busy homeowners, relying on its in-house architects, engineers, contractors and designers. “It creates more accountability on our side and reduces stress for the homeowner,” Harrigan says.

1. Keep Snug With Correctly Fitting Doors and Windows
Tightly sealed, well-installed doors and windows keep out drafts and damp weather. “It’s not a great design without impeccable construction,” Harrigan says. “As a design-build firm, we can dictate the terms of the architecture and then make sure it comes to fruition.”
Window design and placement were critical considerations for these Portola Valley homeowners. “This particular homeowner wanted to wake with the rising sun each day and needed enough windows to see the sun each morning throughout the year,” Harrigan says. “Understanding the play between windows and natural sunlight can be monumental in upgrading the feel of the space.”

2. Relax Knowing Your Quality Materials Will Last
For Timeline, luxurious and lasting quality results are the standard. “We’re very selective. There’s a minimum level of quality we need to have in our projects,” Harrigan says. “Prospective clients can see the details and how timeless we’ve made a home feel. You can see and appreciate the effort.”
At this Santa Cruz beach cottage, the use of high-quality materials creates a soft, comforting feel. “There’s a sense of warmth and relaxation,” Harrigan says. “The multi-ply engineered hardwood is extremely durable and doesn’t warp like other hardwood flooring. Plus, the wall paneling adds a nice touch of character and traditional charm to the home.”

3. Stay Warm Year-Round With the Right Insulation
To keep a glamorous home complete with high ceilings and tall windows comfortable, insulation is key. This great room in San Francisco is the perfect example, with a chapel ceiling and two walls of bifold glass doors that open to the outdoor living space. “When we design a great room, we want to incorporate as many doors and windows as possible,” Harrigan says. “Now, even with double-pane windows, there can be a lot of heat loss during the winter.”
To counteract that heat loss, Harrigan counsels homeowners to insulate their attic and under-floor spaces. “Not only does this allow for increased comfortability, it saves on electrical bills by keeping the temperature consistent inside,” he says.
