The best interior design, whether you’re redoing an existing space or starting from scratch, is fresh and inviting while also being a reflection of your personal style and taste. Combining business and design. Leibrand came to United Signature in 2017 with a business degree. She says she was immediately pulled into the design aspect of the business. “I thought, ‘This is cool,’ ” she says. After going back to school to study design, she now takes on design projects at the company’s Everett location.
Ensuring long-lasting appeal. Leibrand says one piece of advice she gives to every homeowner is to make choices that will last. “You don’t want to follow every trend,” she says. Instead, she recommends going small with current trends you love, such as cabinet hardware or accessories. “Tuck them in where they can easily be changed in the future,” Leibrand says.

1. Play Up Your Location
Choose design elements that connect your interior to its surroundings. These Hansville homeowners knew they wanted to build a home that reflected its coastal location. “They wanted to emphasize the beauty of the site,” Leibrand says.
Multiple windows and doors brighten the kitchen and dining area. “They asked us to bring in the views,” Leibrand says. High ceilings combined with white walls, cabinetry and countertops help keep the space light and airy and also give the room a traditional coastal vibe. Matte black cabinet hardware and pendant lighting add a contemporary touch.

2. Make It Your Own
Customize the look and features of a space to fit your own style and needs. “The homeowners wanted an updated kitchen that would be more elegant than what they had,” Leibrand says of this Lynwood home. She redesigned the space to fit the homeowners’ contemporary vision while staying within the original footprint.
Leibrand started with a color palette of blue, gray and white. “They like cooler colors,” she says. The clean style of the new and more functional cabinetry contributes to the modern feel. The minimalist look continues with the brick-set subway tile backsplash. A new pantry provides additional storage and the new engineered oak flooring ties the room together.

3. Rethink a Classic
Look for new takes on tradition. This Seattle bathroom was taken from its original design to a contemporary style while still retaining some of the original flair. “They used the Victorian-inspired tub as the inspiration,” Leibrand says.
She reworked the room’s layout to make better use of the space. She removed the original tub-shower combination and installed the separate tub below the window. “It is modern but has a Victorian feel,” Leibrand explains. A new and larger low-curb shower is next to the tub. The traditional hexagonal floor tiles have a modern feel thanks to the dark color. “They wanted the floor to be a statement piece,” Leibrand says.
