Nestled in a well-established Fairfax County community, the owner’s appreciated their home’s large kitchen and family room area, but knew changes were necessary to meet their evolving needs. Their goal for this kitchen remodeling project was to create a warm and inviting family-friendly space. BOWA’s design build experts worked with the family to understand their challenges and wishes then developed the perfect design solution while staying within the home’s existing footprint.

At the top of the list, the existing kitchen was dated, somewhat dark and didn’t transition smoothly into other areas of the main level. The remodeling contractor suggested installing a beautiful, custom arched window over the sink which now provides abundant natural light no matter what the weather. The existing coat closet was replaced with cabinetry, to visually integrate it into the high-end feel of the kitchen. An awkward kitchen desk was redesigned as a sophisticated buffet and now features ample storage and display space. Additionally, the height of the half wall between the kitchen and family rooms was reduced allowing the kitchen countertop to be extended for casual seating. As an avid baker, more counter space was a “must have” for the homeowner as she regularly ramps up cookie production for family and friends.

The design team reconfigured the kitchen to incorporate space-saving appliances, such as a Jenn-Air microwave drawer and under-counter oven. The clean lines and improved traffic flow are enhanced by dark granite countertops and a subtle white Carrarra marble backsplash. Custom moldings and beautiful beadboard detail are carried into the family room, providing a graceful transition.

The homeowners are thrilled with their bright new kitchen and family room. Sophisticated, yet warm, it perfectly suits their style for enjoying family time and entertaining friends.
