When designing their contemporary country retreat in Bluemont, Virginia, a priority for the homeowners was to incorporate green building practices. From the solar orientation on the property to the integration of a solar chimney with the design of the home, the goal was to combine both form and function. As part of a larger construction project, BOWA helped the homeowner to achieve their objectives by providing an expertise in green building, value engineering the project, managing every detail and providing solutions to a variety of challenges.

Situated on over 100 acres in the Piedmont region of Virginia, the home was oriented to maximize solar gain during the cold, winter months and wide overhangs were designed for the south side of the house to block the high sun in the summer. In addition, strategically placed fins provide shade while not obstructing the breathtaking views of the countryside.

The home relies on a solar chimney which provides a natural ventilation system for the house. It is, essentially, a solar-powered all-house fan as well as a striking architectural element. The natural stone of the chimney on the second story is mirrored in the family room, and brings the outdoors in. In addition, the contractor’s team custom designed and fabricated a metal cap for the chimney to extend the life of the cap.

The roof construction presented a particular challenge, with a very complicated arch that necessitated a thoughtful selection of materials to optimize success. The new white roofing material was chosen in part for its energy-saving properties. A photovoltaic system of solar panels was installed on the roof to provide electricity for the residence, while a separate solar pump system heats the pool.

Hot water, as well as radiant floor heat on the main level and in the pool house, is supplied via a geothermal system, using the renewable solar energy stored underground.

Home automation controls everything from the automatic window shades, to lighting, to heating and cooling systems, hot water and even the ice maker – allowing the homeowner to monitor, control and conserve resources in the home from their city pied-à-terre.
