The homeowners had recently purchased a beautiful Alexandria, Virginia home, as well as the property immediately behind it. Their desire was to add an English-style conservatory to the main house, and to create a resort-like retreat in the rear yard by integrating the two lots with a garden, pool and pool house. Because of the unique nature of the renovation, the permitting process proved to be particularly arduous. Working closely with the residential architect, BOWA, an experienced design build contractor and luxury remodeler, was able to successfully navigate the team through the process and get the project off to a strong start.

A key component of the remodeling project was the custom-designed conservatory, which features panoramic views of the pool and gardens. Special care was taken to carry finishes, such as the 16″x16″ floor tile, from the existing home into the new space. Custom woodwork is highlighted throughout the addition including finely detailed moldings and a beautiful bead-board ceiling. The roof boasts a state-of-the-art snow melting system, and double french doors provide a gracious egress to the garden.

The new pool house includes a spacious, light-filled gathering room on the main level. The space features custom wide-plank floors, a bead-board ceiling and a gas fireplace, which all add to its charming character. A “summer kitchen” and pool bath complete the first-floor layout, along with an additional two-car garage. Upstairs, two bedrooms and a full bath provide a comfortable guest retreat. The front elevation, scale and exterior finishes of the cottage-style pool house were carefully designed so the street-side view would look appropriate and complement the neighboring homes.

As the centerpiece of the backyard retreat, the newly installed pool and surrounding landscaping perfectly integrates the two properties. In addition to the water fountains, the custom pool includes a Badu Swimjet water treadmill. The family is thrilled with their beautifully appointed new spaces.
