I have a Schlage smart lock on my front door in Cathedral City, but we rarely use the front door. There is an additional security door, and we leave that unlocked when we are not there, so someone can access the smart lock. We do not use the smart lock when we are there and leave it unlocked and lock the security door instead. Using the smart lock does run the batteries down fairly quickly. Mine uses four AA batteries instead of one battery.
Normally, we enter the house through the garage, but one time when I went there, the battery in the garage door opener was dead, but I was able to get in via the smart lock and retrieve a spare garage door opener that I keep inside the house. I then ordered new batteries for the garage door openers.
To let service people in when I am not there, I use their phone numbers for the codes (without area codes), and so there is no way they can forget what the code is. I deactivate the code after they leave. For friends, I use their birthdays for the code, and that is also something they cannot forget.
The lock I have automatically unlocks itself when the code is entered, and I guess that is why my batteries do not last so long, but I almost never use it. It is more like a backup, in case I cannot get into the garage.
