As a 74 yo avid exerciser, I have trouble getting out of a narrow rimmed free standing tub like in example 2. The before tub may have been outdated, but the surround allows the bather to sit on the ledge and then swing over legs to stand. I would suggest anyone remodeling for aging in place to try climbing in and out of a prospective tub at the showroom. It's surprising the amount of arm strength and good balance that is required.
One observation. The last thing anyone aging in place needs is a stand alone tub. Accessing them would be difficult and dangerous. There are alternatives; probably the best for elderly people is a walk in shower with little or no curb.
