Oh my goodness, I have not heard about him. He looks precious, I hope has lots of good adult support.

One of my favorite social media accounts. He is so incredibly talented and creative. I can barely sew a button.

My skeletons will never be in AD. They spend the rest of the year in my storage room sitting in my extra dining room chairs!

Ignore the very dirty Adirondack chairs!

I can totally appreciate the idea of seasonal decorating that is a little more adult and sophisticated, but unless I were having a party I can't really see buying anything like this, to be trotted out for a month every year and stored away for 11 months and having similar for other Hallmark holidays throughout the year. Actually I kind of like my cardboard howling cats and eye rolling pumpkins that we taped in the windows in the 1960s. We had a spider web that stretched across the window but the dog got caught in it so it never got put up after that.

To me it really gives the notion that spending disposable income on things like that is actually disposing money on things that you will eventually dispose of because they have no intrinsic value and are pretty worthless as soon as they are purchased. And I added up $1000 worth of items just scrolling down partway through the list.

The client/friend I have who is downsizing into a small apartment currently lives in a working class (which does not mean low income) neighborhood, where seasonal exterior decorating is expected on her block, and pretty much every month has a theme. It doesn't have to be particularly expensive, but if you don't do it, you are kind of considered a bad neighbor. If you buy a house on the block, there is actually a fee for maintenance of permanently wired exterior lighting, that zigzags from house to house down the block at about 11-12 feet above the street.

Anyway, so this client has a LOT of seasonal decor for a 900 sq foot house with one large window, a front door and stoop on the first floor. And it is midrange and not junk, but not as sophisticated as this. At least one door wreath for each month, seasonal flags, garlands lit and unlit and so forth. (There used to be stores that sold "flat" vases that would fit on peoples' windowsills and not interfere with the blinds and drapes. The picture window being a "stage" for decorating). Again this is a working class neighborhood. Everyone has layered window treatments some of which are Never opened. No interior life on view in that neighborhood.

She ended up having to Give all of it away and what little she couldn't give away of that kind of stuff became part of what she had to pay someone to Haul away. (Every bit of her price point-furniture, --newer Broyhill and such--any used furniture place that looked was only interested in her "old" furniture which was inherited--which she is keeping. The rest was considered landfill fodder--but this is a whole 'nother topic.) Back to the seasonal decor, the neighbors ate it up, they just were't willing to pay anything significant for it.

(it also makes me thing about relative income compared to most people in the US, I know what percentile my personal and our household income puts me/us in, and between all the money spent on decorating, and the sheer volume of clothing that comes into people's houses in the monthly clothing thread--kinds of money I don't think I have to spend like this, well, enough said on that)

This thread made me think of Lynn’s wonderful Halloween decor, one of my favorites ever.

I miss seeing her!

Big impact with just a few changes! Nicely done, Kswl! I love the dresser in the sunroom. Seems a better focal point there, and the banner works surprisingly well by the new table. I’m looking forward to seeing your kitchen mini reno (although any reno imo is never really ’mini’).

I have one errand downtown (making final selection for our commemorative Christmas ornament for our choral society) then golf. This is ine of the new lightweight heathered polo sweaters from J Jill. there are black and white flecks in the blue so the black skirt looks better with it IRL.

Finally, pics of the rain coat—

Closed

Open.

IDK if it shows as much in a photo as IRL but what a difference the right size makes! Will style with dark pants and probably a turtleneck and loafers with no socks. The shoes are a bit much with the coat (but fine for golf!).

They were a kickstarter business based in Pittsburgh for years and I've ordered a few things from them and was pleased with the merchandise. I haven't checked their site for a while and was happy to see that they've branched out and a few more brick and mortar stores now carry some of their items. Recently the original team retired and the new owners are Maryland China which manufactured their dinnerware. The last time I was back in PGH I stopped in a coffee shop near where I grew up and noticed they had some of their mugs for sale.

One of my favorite t-shirts is from Calamityware and I wish they'd bring it back but many of their items are limited production. I've given this shirt as a gift to a few friends and they all loved it. This is my last one............

I also have a large overnight tote bag - it reminds me of Vera Bradley but with dragons, flying witches and freaky creatures.

I ordered a bunch of plates, one of each design, earlier this summer. They came beautifully packed, everything intact, and are exactly what I expected based on the images from the website.

After my purchase I got an email (because of course I got added to their email list) that there was a change in ownership this summer. The original owners are stepping back and the porcelain company they had partnered with it taking over. I don't think that's anything to be concerned about, but just a heads up. Their letter below.

Friends,

We have very important news to share. Don, Lynnette, Jack, and Nina have decided to step away from Calamityware.

This is a momentous occasion for us. We are leaving Calamityware happy and healthy. And while we will miss plenty about the business (friendships, brainstorming, making jokes, and our devoted followers), we look forward to our next chapters.

...

And while this is bittersweet for us, we are excited to announce that Calamityware will live on.

Our friends and porcelain suppliers for the last 12 years, Maryland China (a fourth-generation family-run business), have agreed to continue making and selling Calamityware products. If you’ve owned a Calamityware mug, plate, or bowl, you already know their work. We all know they can handle the porcelain side of the business, and they are already brainstorming new non-porcelain products. They also have a few advantages we never had, including more than a century of experience and considerably more warehouse space. We're hopeful that future Calamityware products will still be inspired by future Don drawings.

We know we are leaving our beloved customers in good hands (fair warning: the new owners might be Ravens fans).

Starting on July 1, 2026, Calamityware will be changing hands. You probably won't notice much of a change—the website will be the same, fulfillment will be the same, and you'll still get emails a couple of times a week. Of course, they won't be written by Jack, so all of the words will probably be speld corectly.

And the current team isn’t disappearing completely. Don, Lynnette, and Jack will be available to Maryland China for the foreseeable future to answer questions, share what we've learned, and help with the transition…at least until they figure out where we hid everything. But the main goal will continue: keep making weird things for nice people.

Thank you for being part of this story. We’re excited to see where it goes next.

With gooey gratitude,

Don, Lynnette, Jack, and Nina

I'm not familiar with her but it sounds like she was a lovely person. Our relationships with "strangers" on the internet are very complicated, as evidenced right in this tiny part of it!

I used to listen to an early morning radio program hosted by a favourite radio personality whose drive program I had previously enjoyed. The host was relatively young (56) and a really, really nice person, always kind to his callers and guests, spearheading many charity drives, I've never heard anyone say a bad word about him.

Then one morning I turned the radio on in the car and heard the then drive presenter's voice. He announced with great sadness that the morning presenter had passed away in his sleep. I cried all the way to work and I'm tearing up now as I type, even though it was four years ago. I haven't listened to early morning radio much since then.

DLM, Simon was so wonderful with all those foster dogs who had medical needs. His owner (and her now-husband) are really amazing people.

When I found that page, I scrolled back a while. There was one foster dog that was so cognitively impaired that they sadly had to put it down. They sent Simon to her parents so they could focus on this foster dog--they officially adopted it so that dog didn't pass without a family! Omg I sat and cried a good hour over that.

wow! i love the incredible architecture and all the ocher yellows (as well as the views and that green trim 😍) i feel like the place is drowning in all their collections tho, so gives me a bit of claustrophobia overall (i love to collect things so am always thinking about the right balance)

It's interesting, because I don't think they ever changed their look during their careers. The kitchen with stainless and brass range and cabinets is relatively recent, but I am thinking maybe it was inserted into a corner of a mostly existing kitchen.

They dressed more or less the same for 40 years as well.

“I finally resorted to buying the paper thin printed rugs from Dash and Albert.”

Dee, that’s what I have!!

I spoke to Costco and they want to replace these with a new set of the same before they refund anything. :(

Spanish, when Wirecutter was inagurated in the NYT it was great. Now it seems merely a source of revenue. There is NO way their recommendations aren’t heavily influenced by a variety of factors other than reliability, performance and price— which IMO should be their ONLY considerations.

"I would make an offer that subtracted the cost of painting the whole house, replacing all flooring" And your offer would be turned down. No doubt the home is priced already with these things in mind. As said by another poster, most paint their preferences anyway. This home is just all same same so it comes off overwhelming when actually it's like all homes, a lot of walls waiting for the new owners touch.

I wonder if it is a sale to settle an estate or if the owner has moved to a care facility? That might explain why the sellers didn't change anything. It looks immaculate in the photos.
Edited to add - the large bar area in the main entry is a very odd design choice.
