To eliminate an inconsistent layout, we removed the wall dividing the dining room from the living room and added a polished brass and ebonized wood handrail to create a sweeping view into the living room. To highlight the family’s passion for reading, we created a beautiful library with custom shelves flanking a niche wallpapered with Flavor Paper’s bold Glow print with color-coded book spines to add pops of color. Tom Dixon pendant lights, acrylic chairs, and a geometric hide rug complete the look.

Our La Cañada studio designed this lovely home, keeping with the fun, cheerful personalities of the homeowner. The entry runner from Annie Selke is the perfect introduction to the house and its playful palette, adding a welcoming appeal. In the dining room, a beautiful, iconic Schumacher wallpaper was one of our happy finishes whose vines and garden colors begged for more vibrant colors to complement it. So we added bold green color to the trims, doors, and windows, enhancing the playful appeal. In the family room, we used a soft palette with pale blue, soft grays, and warm corals, reminiscent of pastel house palettes and crisp white trim that reflects the turquoise waters and white sandy beaches of Bermuda! The formal living room looks elegant and sophisticated, with beautiful furniture in soft blue and pastel green. The curtains nicely complement the space, and the gorgeous wooden center table anchors the space beautifully. In the kitchen, we added a custom-built, happy blue island that sits beneath the house’s namesake fabric, Hydrangea Heaven. ---Project designed by Courtney Thomas Design in La Cañada. ダイニングは家族がそろって向き合うスペース。食卓を囲んで会話がはずめば、食事もいっそうおいしく感じられることでしょう。日本の家庭では、リビングダイニングとしてまとめられている間取りも多いですが、食事をいただく場所ですので、いつも片付いていて清潔に保たれているようにしたいですね。特に、朝食・ランチ・ディナーすべてをダイニングでとるという方は、いっそうインテリアに力を入れたい場所です。ダイニングの多くがキッチンの隣に設置されている場合、デザインに統一感を持たせると空間がすっきりとした印象になります。

コンテンポラリースタイルのダイニングのインテリアは“シンプル”が正解

ダイニングの主役は、ダイニングテーブルに乗る食事です。食事をおいしく食べる場所という役割が明確なダイニングのインテリアは実に悩ましいところです。例えば、レストランではフレンチ、イタリアン、和食、中華とジャンルごとにインテリアも食事に合わせてコーディネートしますが、一般の家庭では今日はイタリアン、今日は和食、とそのときどきによってメニューが変わるのでそうはいきません。なので、どんなものにも合わせやすい、シンプルめなダイニングインテリアで統一するのが正解。その代わり、ランチョンマットを食事によって変えたり、テーブルに季節の花などを飾ったりして、その料理を引き立たせ、かつ、ダイニングルームにアクセントを与えましょう。

コンテンポラリースタイルのダイニングの照明の選び方

ダイニングでは照明も重要なポイント。食材をおいしそうに見せ、家族の“おいしい”顔をはっきり映す照明の選び方を知りましょう。ダイニングの照明は、発色をきれいに見せてくれる白熱球がおすすすめです。ダイニングは照明の使用時間も長いので、導入費用はかかれど寿命が長いLEDのタイプが人気です。特に、食欲をかき立てる“赤色”が鮮やかに見えます。また、陰影がはっきりするので立体感が出て、お料理をいっそう美しく、おいしそうに見せます。さらに、ダイニングにペンダントライトを設置する際には、その高さもポイント。高すぎるとまぶしさを感じ、低すぎるとテーブルの端まで光が当たらず、影ができてしまい、せっかくの料理も引き立ちません。シェード（傘）とテーブルまでの距離は、60〜80cm程度はなれているのが理想です。また、バランスのよいシェードの大きさ（直径）はテーブルのサイズの1/3程度とされています。ダイニングの照明は、実際に設置やシミュレーションをしてみないと、明るさや光の届く範囲がなかなか想定できません。コンテンポラリースタイルのダイニングの広さや間取り、自然光の入る窓の位置などを把握したうえで、照明の専門家に相談するのがおすすめです。
