Steve and the whole team at M&J Star construction did a fantastic job on our major remodel project that spanned almost 2 years (April 2020 to April 2022). From the initial concepting and budgetary estimate, recommending an excellent architect that translated our ideas into working plans for permitting, Dealing with the many curveballs the city planning and inspectors threw at us during the project to ultimately delivering the build on time and on budget (>300k$; 1100 sq.ft; New custom kitchen, new family room; 8 months from demo to final walkthrough). What we appreciated the most was the open and transparent partnership, the problem solving to make up time and cost when needed and the quality of the workmanship of all of his staff and the trades brought in. We highly recommend M&J Star construction for any major remodel/new build you are considering.

We were really blessed with the crew at M&J Star. They really know what they are doing and were genuinely helpful. They would advise us on our options and guided us during indecisions. We appreciate their honesty and they were always looking out for our best interest. The quality of work is also top notch. They work really fast with no delay on their part. Amazing is all we can say. We did a small remodel about 8 years ago with someone else and saying that job was a nightmare is an understatement. M & J Star Construction was AMAZING. We told them our worries and concerns from the last person before we started and they put us at ease and got to work. The work they did (new bathroom, enlarge a bedroom, roof, CA room, etc...) was better then we had expected. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail was second to none. They kept us up to date regularly on what was happening and what was next and their timeline was spot on. We would HIGHLY recommend them for any work you need on your home.

M & J Star completed a major interior renovation of our home for us. The scope of the project included a complete overhaul and upgrade of the kitchen, the bedrooms, the bathrooms, the laundry room and the family room. Other upgrades included the staircase, the flooring, the fireplace, the electrical and lighting system, as well as the removal of a raised section of the concrete slab, re-pouring and leveling. M & J owned by Steve uses their own crew with only some trusted specialty sub-contractors. The crew led by Estuard were excellent. They knew what they were doing and their attention to detail is what really impressed us. The "fit and finish" of the work really shows. The proposal was detailed and itemized. It was very specific in what materials M & J would supply and what materials were owner supplied. That part required quite a bit of involvement by us but if we ran into a snag Steve was able to direct us to vendors he is familiar with. The proposal also included an option for M & J to handle all city permitting or for us to handle. Highly recommend you let M & J handle all permitting and local inspections. The project finished on schedule. Just as important it finished within the expected budget planning for upgrades, changes, and unexpected contingencies. We would highly recommend Steve and the team at M & J Star.

My project involved a complete gutting of my 1955 house and turning the 2550 sf home into a masterful modern home to be an example of modern luxury and convenience within my S California neighborhood. I used a well-renowned architect, Dean Larkin. Dean co-interviewed on Zoom the possible five contractors, we looked at past completed projects, and interviewed the contractors' past clientele/homeowners. Vartan, the owner of M&J Star Construction, was the hands down best contractor, negotiable on pricing of all five possible contractors. His bid was competitive and detailed. He was negotiable and willing to take on a set of architectural plans of extreme detail. Vartan and his crew were on time to every meeting, which was every Friday, to review the work and changes needed. Quality of work was EXCELLENT with no qualms when asked to make changes or corrections, which were minimal. Further, since M&J construction has its own workers who do demo, scaffolding, electricity, drywall, plasterers, and cement, their work was inspected weekly by the site manager. Since the subcontractors have been with the owner (Vartan) for more than a decade, which include Barrett (plumbing), tilers, sand blasters, HVAC, Le Canada windows, and stone fabricators. All work was completed in an excellent manner, to spec, and in a timely manner. Change orders were graciously accepted and delays were minimal. Professionalism was excellent. It is important that the contractee has an excellent line of communication with the contractor to resolve any issues. Vartan was consistently available, friendly, negotiable, fair, and performed any change requests without any evident frustrations, sarcasm, or push-back. He was easy to work with and the architect very much liked Vartan, as did I. The construction was nine months in duration, beyond excellent, and included the installation of extremely high-end products, i.e., Thermador, Wolf, Miele, LG, Everpure, Hansgrohe, & Graf. Custom cabinetry and closets were built throughout. Skylights, custom mounted patio heaters, and Lutron Caseta to develop a complete smart home were installed. I would without hesitation recommend M&J Star Construction.

Vartan and his team helped us refresh an older home we bought and it feels like new! He helped problem solve when our initial tile idea was not going to look as expected and kept us up to date throughout the process. The project stayed on schedule and was even completed a few days early. His team does it all and has attention to detail.

Great company! We have completed two projects with them: one commercial warehouse with cold kitchen and office in 2020 and one retail bakery in San Clemente in 2021. Both projects were executed perfectly and in a timely manner. They know what they’re doing, will do what it takes to get things done on-time, and are honest and up front about any changes that may occur along the way. We plan to work with them in 2022 on our largest project yet. Highly recommend.

Steve and his crew built a permitted retaining wall in my back yard about 100' long and 5' high. My wife and I are EXTREMELY pleased with the wall, the workmanship, and the courtesy of the crew. Steve's crew passed every county inspection without issue and the area was spotless after they were finished. Great crew and they always found time to discuss and explain things to me when asked. Highest recommendation!

M&J Star did an amazing job on our very complicated remodel! They were always very professional, and did everything with quality and care. I have used several contractors on projects throughout my life, but this is the first one that I would recommend to others. Like every major remodel, there were unforeseeable complications on our project that were nobody's fault, but I think these guys were extremely fair in how they approached the necessary changes and didn't gouge me as other contractors have. Their attention and presence also did not taper off towards the end of the project. Start to finish these guys were great.

The casita is not only beautiful but the construction is flawless. Perhaps above all is the hands on almost daily from Mr Kirakossian . Every question I asked was answered right away and honestly. My wife and I were looking for a reputable contractor to remodel our upstairs bathroom. We contacted M & J Star due to their glowing reviews. Well, the reviews are right. M & J Star's work is impeccable (seriously). Due to such fine work on our bathroom, the next year we hired them to remodel the rest of our home. Again, they surpassed our expectations. To quote my wife: “Our house is so nice it’s like being on vacation every day!” Guess what? The following year we added a granny flat to our property. Who did we call? M & J Star Construction, of course! Again, they did not disappoint. We were concerned that the granny flat might be an eyesore. We should never have worried. Not only is it beautiful but it looks like it has always belonged on our property. My wife and I joked that maybe we should move into the granny flat. It is that nice! They are professional, friendly, honest, and always treated us like we were their only and best customer. They took the time to help us with design decisions and never made us feel uncomfortable about asking questions. We could tell that they had our best interests at heart. We cannot recommend them enough.

We have hired M&J Star Construction for many different projects over the years and highly recommend them. They have remodeled our bathrooms, made custom cabinets with quartz countertops, custom showers, installed new wood and travertine flooring, repiped our entire home, made a custom wine rack, repainted, installed beautiful la cantina doors and color our concrete. M & J Star Construction served as the general contractor on the six month remodel of our twenty year old home. Hearing beforehand all of the horror stories about bad contractors made selecting a contractor the scariest thing of our project. We consider ourselves so fortunate to have chosen M & J Star Construction to be our partner in the remodel. We could say all of the usual things about the high quality of the work (and it was very high quality), or the reasonable cost (we think the cost was roughly in line with others, but certainly not the lowest that we could have found). We could talk about how pleased we were with the results (and we are). But in our minds, there are two important things we wish to tell you about Steve and his crew. First, they listen to what you have to say. There are moments in any project of this size when there are unresolved questions, misunderstandings or disagreements. What was important to us is that our comments were heard and addressed in a mutually satisfying way. While we didn't always "win" our arguments, their willingness to listen to and where appropriate, address our issues in a constructive fashion, made all of the difference in the world. Second, the workers on Steve's crew are exceptional, both in terms of ability and in terms of attitude. On our project, Steve subcontracted little so these were workers who are around for most of the six months. And they were a pleasure to be around. We can't tell you how important it was to be around good people who went the extra mile to make things right. In summary, feeling as though we were working with people who cared about doing the right thing was priceless. That we are thrilled with the quality of work is just icing on the cake.

We hired M & J Star to build a walk-in closet adjacent to our master bedroom. This was a fairly extensive project as it involved filling in a second story open balcony, including new walls and a roof. Steve, David and crew completed our project on schedule, and we were very pleased with the work they did. The closet is exactly as we envisioned it. We highly recommend M & J Star, and would certainly hire them again for any future projects.

M and J star did a professional job on the repair of our home's facade and interior wall repair. We had a leaky roof with extensive repairs needed inside and out. The crew was on time, cleaned up and no problem to have around all day. They were respectful and quiet. Not to mention, diligent and talented in their work product. Steve runs a professional operation and they are our "go to"contractors.

We couldn’t be happier with M&J Star. It took is us 3 years to design our backyard vision and find a contractor and we couldn’t be happier. We selected M&J Star because the owner seemed to understand our vision and was willing to work with us to achieve that vision within a budget. M&J Star was a true partner who helped well beyond expectation. As luck goes, the moment we pulled up our concrete we had 2 months of rain - unheard of in our area. As our yard flooded, M&J Star showed up with water pumps, late on a Saturday night, to help. They brought stepping stones so we could reach our door through the mud. We waited and rescheduled and waited. We had material delayed 3 weeks. Yet, we always felt that we were a priority despite how badly his schedule must have been impacted. The owner, Vartan, is a very talented designer. Although we worked with plans from another designer, where there was a less expensive idea or when the vision didn’t work out in practical terms, Vartan was there with a beautiful solution. We liked his changes better than the original vision. Vartan patiently came to review progress and find solutions to the inevitable issues that occur during a project. Pablo was our construction lead and his work is the highest quality. Drains were moved so that the drain was at a corner of our pavers. He put stone veneer on the front of the house and varied the colors and the seams are perfect. They left the worksite very clean each day. We really enjoyed working with M&J Star and would highly recommend them for their design, professionalism, attention to detail, highest quality workmanship and dedication to a beautiful final product that was within a budget.

Our home had pipes rupture in the slab in two different areas. Steve came in with a great crew and did a awesome job of restoring our home to it's original condition. We had only been in our home for 6 months after completing a full remodel. The company matched the smooth texture and paint. The home was re-plumbed and electrical issues were taken care of. They also helped dealing with the insurance company. We can't say enough about the start to finish of the work.

His team is professional, courteous and considerate of the client's property. They do not make a mess of the house and cleanup every day before departing. Their craftsmanship is remarkable, especially with tile. We would be thrilled with their work at any price, and Vartan is very cost competitive. Timely with a grat and respectful professional crew. Our job grew out of necessity (an unexpected repiping) from a straightforward lav to bath conversion within a time frame that was readonable. All of Steve's personnel were careful and pleasant. Craftsmanship was faultless, and Steve Kirakosian was great at followup. We have never had a finer experience with a contractor.

We have known Steve for about 15 years and have always loved his work. He has performed many projects on the 2 houses we have owned. The biggest, however, was a complete, rip to the studs, kitchen/laundry/family room remodel in 2013. Steve was provided the best value for all the contractors we received bids from. His work was impeccable, and was extremely patient guiding us through: A) cabinet vendor that lost our order twice (not his fault), B) rejection by building inspector that was due to architecture plan issues (not his fault). Contractors can be a flaky lot, but Steve is one of the few that shows up when he says he will show up. I can't say enough good things about him.

Within minutes of looking at what he had to work with, he assessed the errors that were made and made recommendations that were practical and made better sense. We hired M&J Star for a downstairs and upstairs addition to our home. We were very pleased with the firm's level of responsiveness and quality of the work.. Steve's crew was also very pleasant and courteous. One example...About midway through the project, we saw some potential water damage on the walls of the master bathroom that was adjacent to the room addition. We called Steve on a Friday night and he came over first thing on Saturday morning to check on the situation. While the issue was minimal, he was very responsive in checking it out and ensuring any cause was addressed immediately. We are very pleased with M&J Star Construction and have already referred them to one of our friends who is considering a remodel.

M and J Star Construction recently completed a remodel project in which the master bedroom balcony was converted into a home office. They also converted our backyard patio into a California room. They did a great job and we are very happy with the results! We were so pleased with how smoothly the entire project went and we were very happy that it stayed "on budget." Steve was always very personable and very easy to reach. We had lots of questions, and he always took the time to answer them well. He has assembled a great crew of skilled workers - in addition, they were unfailingly polite and trustworthy. At the time of our remodel, we had newborn twins in the house - and we really appreciated the special measures they took so as not to disturb the babies. As with any home project, issues can arise. During our remodel, we discovered that our electrical wiring (from the original home builder) was "not up to code"; this problem was handled quickly and thoroughly by this company. They were also very accommodating of all the upgrades and mini-home improvements we requested throughout the project. We plan to use M and J Star Construction again for future projects and would highly recommend them!
