TJW Custom Homes

We hired TJW Custom Homes (East Aurora, NY location) to construct our new build. We were presented with a display and signed a contract. Two- three weeks later our general contractor Dave quit the company and owner Tom Welsh stepped in for Daves replacement until he hired his son TJ to be the general contractor. Dave was very organized and after he left the company, I had to follow up many times to attempt to contact Tom/TJ to get work done on our house in a timely fashion. Most times Tom/TJ did not line up sub-contractors in a timely fashion, and at times our house would sit for 3-4 weeks with no work being completed. We would get call and get lot of voicemails and sorry I can’t talk right now when we called to ask when contractors would come to complete work. He would often tell us contractors would be on site later this week and they didn’t show. We ended up hiring our own concrete guy to pour our basement and garage because the drywall was in on the house and couldn’t wait for one of Toms concrete contractors due to work being held up since we didn’t have a basement floor poured. During the excavation phase the footing was dug incorrect. An excavator had to be borrowed to make the footing wider so the forms could be poured for construction. The other problem we ran into was the 1st excavation company pushed dirt piles to close to the excavated site and a 2nd company had to come in and move the piles away from the foundation. The 1st guy who dug the basement wrong showed up at my parents door pounding at 9:30pm and highly agitated as to why he was not paid for his work. He threatened to put a lien on my property and stated that he came here because Tom would not answer his phone calls. I advised the excavation individual he would have to contact Tom. The issue was later resolved with negotiating by the home owner to cover cost by taking off the repair work off the first guys price to cover the 2nd guys cost to fix the site work. Another issue we ran into was I received a call from TJ saying that there is feces on my garage wall and was blaming my dog for the mess. I being the home owner told TJ it was not my dog and the house was sealed up. Later that week I found feces in the basement with toilet paper buried under the basement stone. As far as I know Dogs do not climb ladders and we didn’t have any stairs in the basement at this time. Both occasions I had to clean and scrub it down with bleach. The Electrician Rich and Drywaller Kevin were great. Tom doesn’t follow up on warranty work too. I contacted him regarding a window leaking in our house and after multiple times of saying ok I will reach out to you after I talk to my son TJ, I gave up and started calling on my own Classic Door and Window and the siding company to resolve the issue. Classic Door and Window stated it could be the flashing on the house. The sider’s owner came out and stated it was because of the siding fell off the front of the house water got behind it and leaked in. Again, I had to call these contractors because TJW delayed to contact these individuals to come out and inspect where it could be leaking. During the time of the window leaking Tom nor his son TJ came out to inspect the house to temporarily stop any further leaking. I would not recommend this Construction business to build your future home.

This builder was recommended to us by a few people when we started discussing building a custom home. Tom and Dave were insightful and knowledgable from the design stages to the finishing touches. They worked with us throughout the project to make sure the project stayed on budget and there weren't any surprise expenses at the end, which is always a concern with custom work. The sub contractors were excellent at their trades. We completed the house a year ago and they still support any questions or issues that have come up over the past year. I highly recommend this builder.
