East Bay Emmy-Nominated Interior Designer | Best of Houzz 2015-2018

With a background as a set designer for film and television, I bring a unique perspective to interior projects. I believe that every space has a story, one that's defined not only by its architecture, but by the people who use it. To that end, we at Coombs Design love getting to know our clients, so that we can create a home or business that is tailor made to them. Our goal is to create spaces that are expressly designed for you and how you live your life. We believe the best way to achieve this is through our full design and implementation process. This works as follows: we allot time to get to know you and the space itself. We talk about what the room is doing well and what it could do better. We discuss your priorities for the space, which helps to inform where to direct the budget. Then we move forward with suggesting specific layouts, finishes, furniture, and other decorative items. After everything is chosen, we handle the shopping and manage the contractors and craftsmen. Finally, we oversee the installation and styling of the space. Although there are certain stylistic throughlines in our work, we pride ourselves on not having a singular look. Instead, we see our job as sussing out our clients' own unique style. We then pair that style with our team's keen eye for color combos, pattern mixing, and spatial harmony. The result are rooms notable not only for their beauty, utility, and comfort, but their personality, too. The process is not so different from working in TV really, only our clients' lives are the context instead of a script.

I had never worked with a professional designer and was leery of someone telling me what to do rather than listening to what I wanted to do. But my fears were completely unnecessary! Sarah excels at listening, suggesting, and constantly revising her suggestions depending on the client's feedback. We are SO pleased with the way our house turned out! We enjoy it daily and I'm quite sure we would never have gotten to where we are without Sarah. We just don't have the kind of vision she has.

I've worked with a few designers over the years and Coombs Design is by far my favorite. Sarah worked with us at every step. She did a great job getting a sense of "our style" to make recommendations that we would love and was able to help us sort through what we really wanted in order to keep us on budget. She helped manage the process for us and brought in top notch professionals to implement the work. We love the changes to our house and can't wait to tackle some new projects in the future with Sarah's help again.

Sarah helped me plan out the living and working spaces in a small bungalow house. She had a lot of unique creative ideas for making the small rooms feel bigger and her advice about paint colors, wall treatments and furniture arrangement was spot on. It was great to find an interior decorator who could help map out a small space and Sarah was extremely helpful in making my house feel like home :)

I had never worked with an interior designer before but was hoping for help with a couple of rooms and made calls to a few other professionals before coming across Sarah’s profile. I was quoted some astronomical figures and was starting to figure that maybe it wasn’t in the cards for us. Luckily I found Sarah before I gave up and am so happy I did. Aside from being a great designer who isn’t going to charge you $70,000 per room, she’s easy to work with, friendly, and unbelievably responsive. Seriously, you wish everyone you worked with was Sarah! We love the rooms she helped us with and would not have been able to do it without her.

Sarah and her team is very professional and organized. They helped me from planning, design, purchasing, receiving to staging and implementation. There are more than 30 revisions from original plan and the outcome is amazing. They are always patient to listen to what we need. Everything is planned ahead and without exceeding budget. We worked with Sarah to renovate our in-law apartment unit which we use to host visiting family/friends and Airbnb guests. This was the first time for us using an interior designer. Sarah was extremely professional, she was quick to grasp our needs and came up with a plan that made sense. I can whole heartedly say that it was totally worth it for us to use her services. The whole unit came together in wonderful way and within our budget. We felt like interactions with Sarah were efficient and at the right "level". We provided high level (mostly vague) inputs about what we wanted and she translated them into specific and pragmatic design choices that worked with our house and our budget. We would definitely work with Sarah again for our next home project.

Sarah Coombs Design is great. It was my first time working with Interior Design firm, and Sarah made the process really easy. She was very transparent about the process, her questions were clear, and our conversations were always efficient. My primary need was a plan for my kitchen remodel that was much needed but I didn't want to overcomplicate it. But, in addition to the kitchen I really wanted our whole home to have a cohesive feeling and good transitions and she was great at helping with specific design challenges (like two kids sharing a small room) as well as clarifying my overall design sensibility. She was great at the actual design, as well as the structure to the project, and recommended vendors, products and methods. I highly recommend Sarah.

Sarah was awesome to work with. She picked up on my style and preferences quickly and came to me with options that fit my price range. My husband and I hired Sarah Coombs Design to redesign our dining room and we are thrilled with the results. We moved into the house three years ago and had never made good use of the dining room. We had a formal dining set that wasn't practical for our young family and a general lack of storage space. The dining table had become a dumping ground for everyday things, instead of the gathering place for family meals and entertaining we wished it would be. The house has an open layout, with the dining room in the middle, so we wanted it to be inviting, tidy, and visually appealing. Sarah and her team did a great job of listening to our wish list, coming up with creative solutions to our problems, helping us define our aesthetic, and implementing a beautiful design. We couldn't be happier with the way it turned out. I would say Sarah has a special knack for designing a family friendly spaces on a budget -- and she and her team are a pleasure to work with!

We are very lucky to have Sarah in the East Bay. Her experience working in NYC is a rare find. She is professional but as a mother she is also practical when needed. I hired Sarah to design our family's laundry room. She is a delight to work with and is a real professional. She is conscious of the budget when offering ideas and takes the time to consider many different options for the space. Sarah is extremely knowledgeable about online and local vendors, allowing her client to access a variety of materials and products. She does an amazing job of helping her client to visualize the space and looks at details such as appropriate counter height, floor color and cabinet door/knob style. Sarah shows a true passion for her work which translates into a satisfying space. We love our new room!

She always kept our wants and needs as her focus. She used her expertise to ask the right questions, find the right resources, and keep us within our budget. Sarah Coombs is an absolute pleasure to work with and I highly recommend her for your next design project. My husband and I bought our 'forever' home—a large 1926 Tudor style house—that had amazing 'bones' but needed a ton of work. The living room is large with gorgeous windows and high ceilings and just commanded a more professional design touch than I could have done on my own. In fact, every time I looked at the room I would get overwhelmed by just the thought of how to make this room live up to its potential. Enter Sarah. She had been recommended to me by friend so I gave her a call. She came to the house and we had a great chat about my vision for the room and how I planned on using it. Over the next few weeks we worked back and forth on various layouts and decor. She was conscientious of my budget and worked diligently to stay within. She really listened to what I wanted and didn't push me into things I didn't like. Plus she answered all my questions and as a result I plan on applying new design knowledge in other rooms in the house! I'm happy to say that because of Sarah, I now have the living room of my dreams in my forever house. I couldn't be more pleased.
