Sage Ecological Landscapes

After meeting with a number of landscaping companies, we contracted with Sage Landscapes for the both the landscape design and installation of our relatively small backyard. Our entire experience with Sage from the initial phone call with Rita, to the first meeting with the team, and through the post-build phase was fantastic. Estimated costs were clearly communicated at each phase and there was never any pressure to contract with Sage for the build out of the design. We came into the design process with some very general ideas of what we were looking for. Our yard included existing fruit trees and shrubs that wanted to keep. Our vision was that the new landscaping would bring a cohesive and balanced, yet natural look to our backyard. Sage's designer Zach listened carefully to understand our vision, and brought it to life with a design that not only met our goals but far exceeded our expectations. After some collaboration on the finishing touches of the design, we received a bid from Sage for the installation of the design. There was no pressure to contract with Sage for the build out. However, after working with Sage through the design process and experiencing firsthand their professional, yet collaborative process, there was no question in our minds that we would move forward with them. It was absolutely the right decision. While working from home due to Covid, we witnessed the hard work, craftmanship, and ingenuity of the Sage installation team. Our backyard was difficult to access, so the team devised a method of transporting materials that was efficient while also being careful not to damage any existing plants or structures. The Sage team work extremely hard during hot days with little shade as they brought the design to life. It was amazing to see how quickly things came together, making it apparent that the team was well managed and had worked together for a long time. One aspect of the design was a water feature that we had decided to choose ourselves. However, by the time the installation started, we still had not found a fountain to purchase locally that we were happy with. Previously during the design phase, Todd had mentioned the idea of a drilled boulder water feature. Given our difficulty finding a fountain to purchase, we decided to revisit it as an option. During the middle of the build out, Todd offered to meet us on a Saturday at some hardscape establishments so we could pick out a boulder to be used for that purpose. We picked out the boulder and in a couple of days, it was installed. The fountain has turned out to be the main focal point of the yard and a magnet for various species of birds that love to bathe in it. We could not be happier with our entire experience with the Sage team and the outcome of that process. Our backyard has become our oasis and we have Sage to thank for that.

Sage designed and installed an entire backyard for us. We could not be more pleased with the result. Working with Sage was a pleasure. We did not have a concept for the design, so Sage discussed options with us and came up with an initial design based on features we were interested in, plants we liked in their display garden and our target budget. They were very flexible and responsive when we wanted to make minor changes to the design. The installation went very smoothly. We were impressed with the quality of the work and the quality of the materials and plants that they sourced. The yard looks fantastic as the plants have started to fill in and we could not be happier that we chose to use Sage.

Sage Landscape installed our backyardwith irrigation and drainage system along with stone work and plantings. They stand by their service with the utmost professionalism. We were amazed what they did for our yard. Would definitely give them the hifpghest recommendation.

I actually found this company while browsing on HOUZZ a couple of years ago. I am happy to say we are now proud owners of a totally re-landscaped yard. Sage was a terrific company to work with at all stages of the project. We presented our wish list and they definitely delivered.

I contracted San Luisito Inc. DBA Sage Ecological Landscaping located in Los Osos, California (License #87817) for the recent contract work completed on my home in the summer of 2016. My personal experience with the company, and owner Todd Davidson was terrible. I paid over $42,000 for our landscaping contract. The concrete constructed in our back yard is uneven and protruding upward. The concrete appears old as if a tree root is pushing it upwards. When looking down the length of the yard, the concrete appears angling upwards and not level to the eye. My wife and I voiced our displeasure with the construction. They refused to back up their work and provided justifications for why it was not completed properly. I must now contract another landscape company to fix their poor craftsmanship at a cost of several thousand dollars. Owner, Todd Davidson offered us a free pot to try and cover up the uneven concrete and their poor workmanship. We declined the offer. We communicated we wanted a dual purpose seating/bench area and provided photos of exactly what we wanted in the design phase of the contract. Our design ideas were not followed and the company built what they referred to as a “seating wall” instead. We had never discussed a wall to sit on, nor had we ever heard of people sitting on a wall as a gathering place. We again voiced our displeasure with the wall. They refused to fix the error and told us we could have it completed as we desired if we paid thousands of dollars extra to fix their error. We declined. We were billed for the final invoice for the contract. We reluctantly paid the bill. Two weeks later we received a notice that we owed an additional $10,000. We requested the bill be explained and the additional 10K substantiated. We received a intimidating letter from Todd Davidson threatening to put a lean on our property and sue us if we did not pay the bill. We again, reluctantly paid the bill. In addition to the above stated issues, we experienced numerous other problems with Sage Ecological Landscapes too lengthy to illustrate in this limited forum. We plan to file a formal complaint letter with the Better Business Bureau and the California Contractors State License Board. My personal opinion of Sage Ecological Landscapes is very negative. My personal experience is that the company has deceptive billing practices, overcharges for change orders - refusing to substantiate their invoices, has poor communication, unprofessional business practices, and their overall craftsmanship and workmanship is very poor. I would not recommend the company to anyone in San Luis Obispo or the Central Valley.

We had Sage completely redo our front landscape to be drought tolerant with a Mediterranean feel. Tom who designed and worked with use the whole way thru knew exactly what I wanted and was really easy to work with. They took care of any issues along the way and was very professional in everything they did. It was also nice to be able to go directly to their nursery to pick out the plants. Would highly recommend these guys for their service and value
