zpd+a and roomTEN design

After ending a long relationship, I bought a pro forma apartment in an iconic building and hired Tai of roomTEN Design and zpd+a to do a reno that I hoped would reflect the life I wanted to live; if I just knew what that was. Over weeks we spoke about what I had left behind, the empty space remaining in the wake and what might fill it. You cannot help but let Tai in to get to know you. We moved walls so that I could cook and face outward to a view of the city I love, instead of facing the pantry. The great room got greater for entertaining, necessitating moving the guest room to another side of the apartment. It’s a loft, so Tai devised a system of doors that would hide the ovens and cooktop when not in use. The construction was perfection. She was unafraid to re-work things until it met her standards, even when it met mine. I cannot tell you what features I love best as I love so many. Is it the leather-clad drawers on my dressing table with the antiqued mirror and the red lacquered interiors? The chandelier and wallpaper in the foyer that she knew would broadcast “Beth lives here!”? The shou sugi ban that clads the custom shelving and evokes the Great Fire? I told Tai that her work has improved my social life as friends of friends who have visited have told me the design makes them want to know me better. Her response? ” It’s not me. Your home reflects your story; it’s your story that leads them to want to know more.” Highly recommended for your next life crisis!

Tai helped us with our kitchen remodel and she was amazing! We could not have done it without her. I really loved her design asthetic and knowledge of both technical architecture needs as well as kitchen design details. I appreciated her honesty and accuracy about budgets and the bottom line and all subcontractors she recommended were great as well!!

We hired zpd+a and roomTEN design in the spring of 2019 to help us with a Kitchen+ remodel. I put the (+) after the word kitchen because we needed to remove a load bearing wall to open up our kitchen space and consequently had to move all our plumbing, electric, and HVAC that ran through that wall! They brought so much knowledge and experience to the whole project. What seemed crazy to me, was nothing to them, and they used every single square foot of our space to make the big change fit and work. From knowing exactly where to stop the expansion to not lose the original charm of our 1948 home, to talking us through exactly where our pots and pans, baking sheets, cutting boards and other kitchen items will go in the custom made cabinets that they designed, zpd+a and roomTEN made sure that everything was thought out and fit our needs, lifestyle, and home. Even though there is no such thing as a perfect construction project, whenever anything came up that was an issue, they were easily accessible and would come up with the right solution. We are complete now and every single day since the end of the project two months ago, either my husband and I will say "we love our new kitchen" or "this new kitchen is great" or "It just works so well!" Honestly, I love cooking and being in the kitchen, and I had no idea how DYSFUNCTIONAL my old kitchen was. Our newly designed space (emphasis on DESIGNED) works perfectly, flows naturally, everything has a logical place, there's room for everything, the new appliances are better than the old, the marble counters they recommended are stunning (although not for everyone!), the purpose and intention behind their work is exactly what we wanted and needed. And it's gorgeous. They talked to us and led us every step of the way in making the right decision for us and our house. Thank you zpd+a and roomTEN. I would recommend you to anyone!

I had a great experience working with Tai and roomTen design on my gut rehab of an old Victorian 2-flat. Although I have kept my building two separate units and have a very small space (@875 sq ft), Tai was able to design me the bathroom of my dreams, my perfect closet, and a kitchen with more storage than I had in a condo 3 times the size. I definitely appreciated their flexibility with my schedule and assistance in choosing products I know nothing about (hello, shower valves). I would definitely recommend roomTen design for your architecture needs!

Working with room Ten Design was a truly refreshing experience. They are very professional and very experienced which is not always easy to find. We worked together on a multimillion dollar project with an extremely demanding client and the results were amazing. roomTen was hired to design two bathrooms in our home built in 1948. Both bathrooms, a master bath and the upstairs hallway bath, were both incredibly outdated. The hallway bathroom was more or less not functional. Tai of roomTen carefully listened to all of my husband's and my desires for what we wanted in our new bathrooms, The hallway bath, which would be shared by our son and daughter, not only was updated, but includes, now, some privacy features so that a boy and a girl can comfortably share it while growing up! The layout of the new bathroom is 100% different than the old bathroom, and the room is bright and cheerful. Ideal for our kids now, at 5 and 2 years old, and will be great as they grow as well. This room is my favorite room in our home now! The master bathroom had a vintage bathtub, a princess tub, that I had fallen in love with. So the design in there was an updating of fixtures and tile, but the tub was just reglazed and is still the centerpiece of that room. The master is a spa retreat now. Tai was professional, well informed, and helpful throughout the process. We were presented with three designs, and got to pick the ones we liked the best for each room. The blueprints and material buys were presented to our contractor and his crew in an orderly fashion, and she worked well with the crew to finish the project quickly. I would highly recommend roomTen's Tai and Adam for your project!

Tai our designer had amazing vison for our home. She was very deligent in working with us to fulfil our dream for the home. I will completely hire her again in design help. Not only is she an amazing desinger but also a very easy person to talk to.

The people at RoomTen are talented and smart, and at the end of the day that is worth almost any price. I love Tai's taste and ingenuity. She has helped me with a number of projects in three homes, but my city apartment's powder room, a simultaneously dark, glamorous, cheeky, and somehow very comfortable place, might be my very favorite. Who knew charcoal wallpaper and herringbone capiz loved each other so much? She challenges convention and attends to the practical at the same time. Try out RoomTen! The city needs more boutique firms like this one.

RoomTEN is one of the most professional and creative architectural/design firms that I have worked with. They are excellent listeners with strong communication skills. They complete projects on time and within budget.

My company designs baby bedding and we have worked on several nursery's with Tai. She is always clear, prompt to respond and easy to work with. Everything get's done without a hitch! I admire the clean and contemporary style they bring to their projects.
